In the 1960s, Henry Maccheroni painted large post-surreal paintings. Working in series (like The Unfinished Worlds or The Nocturnes), he explores the myths of Western painting: Eros, Thanatos, the Crucifixion, the City and painting itself as the foundation of aesthetic writing.
From 1968, photography took an important place in his work. Here again, the "series" approach dominates (2,000 photographs of a woman's sex, the Skulls-Vanities, or the Grandes Archeologique). Photography blends with many collages and carvings (Manhattan-gray).
He also practices engraving (etching, drypoint, black-way).
During the 1970s, he participated in the advent of "socio-critical art" (L'armoire aux jocaux, a gift for the supporters of the death penalty).
In 1982, with Michel Butor, he founded the Center national d'art contemporain (Villa Arson) in Nice.
Henri Maccheroni regularly works with writers for cross-works (Michel Butor, Raymond Jean, Bernard Noël, Pierre Bourgeade, Bernard Vargaftig, Claude Louis-Combet, Jean-François Lyotard and Beatrice Bonhomme). A hundred and twenty books mark his career as a painter, photographer and engraver, testifying to his many collaborations.
He has also collaborated in several journals, notably Artitudes internationales, Opus international, Silec, Obliques.
