About the Item
What Thoughts Are Made Of is a monochromatic, textured oil painting by James Austin Murray. It is an all black oil painting on canvas on wood panel. It is 36x36 It is a stunning abstract painting that continues to shift and move with the light.
James Austin Murray is a minimalist New York artist. He has been exhibiting his work throughout the US since 1992. According to Murray:
"The focus in my paintings is all light. They have a reflective nature that interacts with the light around them. This makes the work subtly interactive with their environments. Black absorbs the full spectrum of light and what we have left is pure reflections of color….I'm compelled to make these paintings by my interest in light and movement, in the paint itself, and the color and character of reflective light….At times I work off-square. I let the shapes influence the paint and give it both a parameter to play with and work within.
The color black, the subject of my painting, is all absorbing. It’s the hungriest of colors sucking all the visible spectrum into itself. The benefit of black is not only that it’s so deep, but the fact that paint is a pigment suspended in a binder. Oil pure black paint absorbs the light spectrum and is also reflective. To me these paintings are not about the dark, as some have wondered aloud. They are about the light they reflect. I find them full of light and strangely bright for being black paintings."
He is a recipient of the Dedalus Foundation Fellowship Award for residency at The Vermont Studio Center, VT and has completed residencies at The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild in Woodstock, NY and Bermis Center for Contemporary Art in Omaha, NE. His work is in private and public collections around the world including Sofitel (Philadelphia, PA), Hotel Palomar (Philadelphia, PA), Four Seasons Hotel (Washington, D.C.), Omni Hotel (Nashville, TN) and Tom Ford (Designer).

James Austin Murray
Painter James Austin Murray works within self imposed rules that allow him to create engaging paintings in pure Ivory black oil on canvas. The unadulterated pigment allows for the texture and movement of the paint to come through. Murray’s work evokes Zen sand gardens in the quiet raking of the paint. His work is meditative, and gestural, yet precise in his technique- the flat surface expands and contracts, ripples and pulses leaving the viewer with a clear sense of movement. Murray, who worked for years as a firefighter, explains that his painting practice is a way to meditate on his connection to the earth, which is enhanced by his use of handmade brushes and pigments he makes himself out of soil sourced from sites with personal or cultural importance. Murray has exhibited in New York, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Singapore, Monaco, Chicago, and Miami. His works are in the collections of the Kimpton Hotel Palomar Philadelphia, Tom Ford, and Thomas Pheasant in Washington D.C.

- Abstract Flowers Oil Painting Study for AmaryllisBy Nobu FukuiLocated in Surfside, FLThis piece is done in a sort of sgraffito technique with the flowers sort of etched in the paint. - Ash: geometric abstract mixed media painting w/ red flowers, fruit & black linesBy Mat TomezskoLocated in Bryn Mawr, PAMat Tomezko's latest series of abstract mixed media paintings are constructed from traditional acrylic painting and the incorporation of ash into a hand-mixed paint of his own creation. This piece is part of a body of work that uses evocative materials and imagery of fire, flowers, food, newspapers, asphalt, and ash to illuminate the interconnectedness of destructive and creative forces. "Ash" is a traditional still-life and landscape composition interrupted by broad black geometric chevron lines or "arrows" that divide the composition symmetrically in a geometric balance. This painting is signed and dated on the back. It includes all hanging hardware and is ready to install -- no need for additional framing. Tomezsko is an artist from Philadelphia who creates abstract paintings, public art installations, and community art projects based around participation and everyday visual language. His approach to composition is informed by mid-century formalism and conceptualism. His work was recognized by the 2017 Americans for the Arts Public Art Network Year in Review for outstanding public art. Tomezsko’s work has been exhibited at numerous art spaces regionally and nationally, including the Crane Arts, Woodmere Art Museum, the Center For Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA), and Wexler Gallery in Philadelphia; Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago, IL; the Delaware Contemporary in Wilmington, DE; and Thomas Hunter Projects in New York, NY. He has created several notable public art projects including "14 Movements: A Symphony in Color and Words," a mile-long temporary mural installed in downtown Philadelphia during the 2016 Democratic National Convention; "Look Long and Look Good," a series of 30 paintings currently installed along Main Street in Manayunk; and "Flowering Axes," a mural in the 5th Street Vehicular Tunnel underneath the Ben Franklin Bridge. His work is in the collection of The Wharton...Category
