ABSTRACTION Mid-Century Abstract Non-Objective Color Field oil American Modern James Daugherty (1887 – 1974) "Abstraction," 11 ¾ x 13 ¾ inches, Estate stamp verso. Oil on panel. The framed work measures 15 x 17 inches. Provenance: James Daugherty Estate. Daugherty grew up in a family that stressed culture. He attended the Corcoran Gallery’s Free School and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts he was a student of William Merritt Chase. In 1907, He moved to New York City where he found work as an illustrator. Attending the Armory Show in 1913 he was inspired by modernist ideas. After 1922 he began painting in the realist style and concentrated on murals. He knew Thomas Hart Benton and integrated that heroic style with bright colors into his work. A favorite son of Connecticut, he worked for a variety of Federal programs including the WPA. Daugherty works are in the Whitney, Smithsonian and many other prestigious institutions.
