The colorful abstract composition is completed in an expressionist style with loose and gestural brushstrokes in calming tones of green, stone blue, and brown. The contrasting patches of dusty pink, teal, and brighter greens pop against the subtle pale gray background. Color is applied in light layers which is noticeable in the faint yet visible under tones of the painting. The oil painting is unframed, with white painted sides so framing is optional. The artist's signature is located on the back of the painting. To say that Jenny Nelson’s paintings are a celebration of process as much as their final, balanced composition would be an understatement. Each one of Nelson’s compositions is a unique roadmap into how her brain operates. Curious, experimental, persistent, dedicated; hers is a confidence built over years of sustained diligence in the studio. Based in Woodstock, NY, Nelson has developed a unique language of artistic expression. Paintings in this series present improvisational, gestural strokes balanced with structure and open space. “By layering, adding and subtracting, a history develops on the canvas. Shapes have a story to tell. Lines that have been obliterated and resurrected have an emotional charge. What started as a wild party ends up as a contemplative, carefully edited composition, involving precise modifications, while hopefully leaving some life force intact”, says the artist of this process. Artist Statement: My work has always been anchored in drawing. I spent years drawing and painting from life. This instilled a strong sense of space and structure. At some point I became more interested in the negative space surrounding the objects I was observing and modifying the objects themselves. I began to organically develop an abstract language, but the sense of structure and organization remained constant in the painting. I apply paint in layers using palette knives, brushes and oil sticks. I initially draw loose gestures and a variety of spontaneous marks. Often traces of previous layers remain visible, allowing colors to interact in ways I could not have anticipated. This process leaves me feeling quite lost a lot of the time, and I have had to learn to become comfortable with that feeling. This sometimes builds to frustration, and I will scrape off much of what was applied, but the result of doing this is often something wonderful that moves the painting forward. I view the painting process as a collaboration between myself and the materials. A conversation starts that has a beginning and an end, but everything in between is unpredictable. It seems at first some exciting things may show up but it’s important to disregard these first, too beautiful bursts, work over them, and develop something deeper from them. As the painting evolves, shapes and lines solidify, and I begin to see how the parts affect the whole. This way of layering, adding and subtracting, creates a history on the canvas. About the artist: Jenny Nelson attended Maine College of Art in Portland Maine, and is a graduate of Bard College, where she received a scholarship to the Lacoste School of the Arts in France. She has been living in Woodstock, New York for nearly two decades, including a Residency at the Byrdcliffe Art Colony from November 2004-08. Graphic, abstract fruit still life painting in a bold palette of green, orange, and blue Oil on canvas 54 x 44 inches This vertical, abstract-style still life painting was created by Hudson Valley-based artist Christopher Engel in 2010. The composition features broad, confident brush strokes in crimson, royal blue, black, emerald and orange against a varied light and dark green background. Some strokes are bold and crisp, while others appear drizzled on the canvas, resulting in a varied, almost tactile surface texture. About the artist and work: Calm and confident brush strokes sweep over each canvas in a selection of abstract paintings by Christopher Engel. His work vibrates with the energy of bold, gestural lines that intersect at points between the foreground and background. These fields are bridged together in a web of kinetic, interconnecting lines which create a remarkable sense of three dimensionality. The close examination of space, or how we create it and replenish a void, is a study that Engel has pursued since he started as a landscape painter in the early 70s. “I was deeply affected by the relationship between the elements of the landscape; trees, shrubs, bushes, and elements on the periphery,” he states, “everything worked to define the space that contained and moved me.” Engel currently works out of a studio near Roxbury, NY, where a pellet stove warms the high ceilings and sunlight penetrates through sky-lights. Nestled in the Catskill mountains, he continues to honor the influence of the natural landscape and remain enamored by the impact of color. With several canvases standing over four feet tall, the surfaces are rich in a sophisticated palette of earth tones; greens, browns, blacks, blues and occasional use of bright red and orange allude to an aesthetic that straddles both landscape and abstraction. Yet despite representational titles such as “Canyon,” Ice Storm”, and “Clear Skies”, Engel’s vision immerses the viewer in suggestions of horizon lines or tree branches rather than orient them directly toward a conventional depiction. Tensions of push and pull are achieved with both opacity and transparency, as well as the natural flow of the medium. Ultimately, the point of departure is radically transformed and the end result is nothing short of powerful. Artist Statement: The Fan Shaped Paintings evolved from the process of mixing paint in paper coffee cups. As I noticed the intriguing arrangement and patterns of color and shapes in the mixing cups I began to set the cups aside to save those images. Years later, I began unfolding the stacks of cups I had saved to see the images and patterns of color. I was also attracted to the fan-like shape of the opened cups. The spontaneous nature of the color and shapes on my palette of “coffee cups” became the genesis of the creation of the Fan Paintings. She now lives in Hamburg, Germany. Preferring the creative aspects of the studies to the technical ones, the artist developed the basics of her painting, never denying the roots of applied design and soon ending in a refreshing, distinctive style. Petra Rös-Nickel experiments with form, along with the use of a technique that draws attention to the processes used in creating a painting.
