James O'Shea
Bridge (Abstract Painting in Blue & Green by James O'Shea)

2024

About the Item

Bridge, 2024 oil on canvas 27.5 x 39.5 inches with a natural maple floater frame Predominantly painted in blue and green, this abstract work by James O'Shea is vivacious while delicately balanced. O'Shea's highly energetic gestures and scribbles guide the eye around the picture plane, revealing layer upon layer of line and color. "Bridge" is set in a light maple floater frame, accentuating the modern feel of the painting. About the artist: James O’Shea’s non-objective paintings reach beyond the apparatus of sight to suggest the full breadth of sensation afforded by nature. Informed by the Hudson Valley’s flora and fauna, O’Shea’s abstractions translate complex networks of information into spirited lines and blocks of paint. The artist studied at City & Guilds of London Art School, Goldsmith's College, and the University of London.

  • Courier (Modern, Black Blue & White Minimalist Abstract Painting on Canvas)
    By Betsy Weis
    Located in Hudson, NY
Monochromatic and minimalist dark abstract painting on canvas Acrylic on canvas, 24 x 32 inches This contemporary, horizontal painting was made by Manhattan based artist, Betsy Weis in 1999. The abstract painting, composed of a primarily dark palette, contains subtle shades of blue, white, and light beige in rectangular formations behind a sheer veil of black acrylic paint. Minimalist in nature, the work concentrates on an ethereal sense of space and depth. This painting on canvas is currently unframed and is ready to hang as is. For painter Betsy Weis, the wild and beautiful essence of nature has been a prevailing inspiration for her work. This influence is not unfounded considering the artist grew up in the coastal region of the Pacific Ocean and studied the work of Titian, Giorgione, and Friedrich. Her use of acrylic results in an eerie, almost dream-like haze that evokes one’s own connection to nature. Through this veil, the viewer is left to contemplate the mystery of nature and the continuous evolution of the human memory, from the past into the present. Weis has shown with the gallery for more than a decade and resides in New York City. Betsy Weis is represented by Carrie Haddad Gallery based in Hudson, NY. (framed) Please note: Our framing studio could not accommodate the scale of this work, so it is being sold as-acquired. Provenance Steve Chase Design, Palm Springs, CA Ronnie Landfield was born in the Bronx, NY on January 9, 1947 - the same day as his older brother. As a teenager, he was encouraged to pursue a career as an artist, subsequently creating his first real paintings around the age of 14. He was particularly influenced by a Life magazine article from 1961 on the Abstract Expressionists, most notably: Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Hans Hofmann, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. After stints at the Art Students League, the Kansas City Art Institute, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the University of California at Berkeley, Landfield’s professional career as a painter began in New York in 1965. The following year, after completing a major series of hard-edge border paintings, success as a painter began to materialize. The famous architect and collector Philip Johnson and the collector Robert Scull each acquired large paintings works, as did the Sheldon Memorial Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1967, Landfield was invited to participate in the Whitney Annual at the end of the year. His work attracted considerable attention, and he was invited to participate in important group exhibitions at the Bykert, Bianchini, and Park Place Galleries in New York. Landfield joined the David Whitney...
