Artist Statement I paint to find answers – to facilitate dialogue between data collected through my life experiences and that which I cannot perceive. The picture plane is the arena in which I seek the connection between these two disparate realms: one tangible, informed by entropy of the urban spaces I encounter daily and the other, a vibrant metaphysical space that comes from within. I’m attracted to surfaces worn through time and use. There is no doubt, a romanticism in the decay of urban entropy, but it is also a record—a blueprint of lives lived. The surface of my work is dappled with shapes borrowed from the tiles and peeling paint that fall from these decaying surfaces. The Digit series; which are some combination of water-based spray paint, acrylic wash, and linoleum printing on paper or panel. My work is directly informed by the environment in which it is made. Past residencies, held in such places as Wyoming and rural Virginia, have introduced new directions in my work. For example, the soil is so rich in petroleum in Wyoming that it commonly catches fire when struck by lightning, creating red toned earth called clinker. These intense, disturbing, saturated reds and oranges found their way into my work and continues to be an influence. Recent iterations include barriers like fencing that still allows the viewer into the seething space. The Digit series deals with the aforementioned duality, directly juxtaposing the tangible and metaphysical spaces while also exploring my identity. The series features my fingerprints (stamped linoleum prints) which not only refer to my physical self (and the tangible world) but also to my personal history. I grew up knowing almost nothing about my father’s side of the family, causing a lifelong curiosity and fueling my artwork. Recently, I found out why: I discovered the existence of a relative who was an infamous gangster. This gave the fingerprints a different, darker energy.
