12.5" x 19" Acrylic on muslin over mdf
This was the last of a half dozen pieces made in 2017 using muslin that was stained prior to being stretched across the fiberboard elements. These initial colors remain visible along the sides of the work, making for a nice little surprise when viewed at an angle.

Jason Matherly is an Athens, GA based artist who produces shaped paintings with an emphasis on precise color combinations. His particolored objects are comprised of multiple elements, each of which is treated as an individual monochrome painting before being joined together as a whole. The goal is to create works imbued with both the meditative subtleties of minimalism and the dynamic, internal logic of sculpture. A librarian by training, Matherly draws inspiration from a broad range of research practices, as well as the everyday rhythms of family life. His works are held in private collections in New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo.
