About the Item
Artist Joseph Meert studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and later the Art Students League of New York after immigrating to the United States as a child with his family from Belgium. Meert studied under Thomas Hart Benton and John Sloan and in the early years of his career was considered an American regionalist. During the later half of the 1930s Meert both taught at the Kansas City Art Institute. He was also was commissioned to paint several murals for post offices in Indiana and Missouri as part of the WPA.
After leaving Kansas and moving back to New York Meert's style moved from his representational, regionalism to one which was completely abstract. He and his wife, painter Margaret Mullin, joined an experimental artists group, and this became a new direction for his career. Though Meert was well-known within the art world and exhibited extensively, he did not garner financial success for his work during his own lifetime.
