Katarina Dordevic
'Bodement 2, ' by Katarina Dordevic, Acrylic Painting

2004

About the Item

This 39.37" x 27.55" acrylic on canvas painting by Katarina Dordevic explores the artist's interest in water and archaeological remnants. "The painting is a vivid evidence of my interest in nature (especially waters), patina with which the archaeological remnants are covered and weaving craftsmanship. Through a combination of figurative appearance and ornamental drawings the “Bodement 2” explores metaphysical atmosphere of the oneiric world in which the river spirit, the fish and human crafts are related to water. Inspired by the textile crafts and artefacts, this painting develops the idea of equilibrium in the composition. One of the most consistently intriguing elements, besides the kilim weaving technique and the symmetry of kilim rugs, is the use of symbolism in their designs. Many of designs are rooted in symbols that had meaning to specific tribes and weavers, symbols with which the ideas and beliefs are transferred to observers. The process of making this pattern is slow, precise and meditating, but at the same time, it opens up a space for intuitive organization of the composition. The decorative element of the background and the ornamental pattern on the border surrounding central rectangle of the painting is the frame for the anthropomorphic figure. This painting echoes water, water creatures, fish, natural reflections, as well as Lepenskivir archaeological collection. I believe that the truth of existence can be found in the fragments of the nature and traditional crafts heritage, therefore, my artwork is expansive and texturally detailed. It is my mental image or impression of my experience, in which this vision is never completely clear and precise, and it establishes a conditioned response in the painting." -- Katarina Dordevic This work has been featured in exhibitions in Serbia, Bosnia, Herzegovina, Turkey, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Iran. Katarina Dordevic is a painter, printmaker and full time professor for painting, born in Nis, Serbia, where she currently lives. She graduated and post graduated from the University of Arts in Belgrade (MFA in Painting, 1994) and is currently undertaking a Fine Arts Doctorate at the same university. Katarina has an academic career spanning more than 18 years at the University of Nis in Serbia and she has been artist-in-residence and guest lecturer in Fine arts at the Fundación Valparaiso in Spain, the 33officinacreativa Foundation in Italy, the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen in UK, the University of Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria and the Akdeniz University in Turkey. Her works has been exhibited in a number of solo and group exhibitions throughout Europe and Asia and her paintings, drawings and printmaking are included into public and private collections. She has received various awards for the artistic achievements in Serbia, Canada and the Czech Republic. Katarina’s creative practice takes the form of paintings, drawings, printmaking and objects. The experiences gathered during numerous travels to various countries and places has been huge source of inspiration for her artwork, which pointed out some similarities between cultures, traditions, people, faiths, and differences, as well. Nature phenomena, reflection of light, atmosphere of local places and patina with which the archaeological remnants are covered influenced her art, therefore vibrant, rich textures outspread compositions of her paintings. She constructs intimate, private and personal interiors from the elements of the world heritage and myth narratives and puts it in the contemporary context, emphasizing its universal symbolic potential.

"This is the sixth piece in the 'Unknown Steps' series where I concentrated on creating compositions constructed off of an obtuse angle. In this piece, that focus is the line starting in the lower right corner that reaches up and left before intersecting the blue and aqua fields and turning to intersect the horizon line of the composition. The other lines were then arranged as an extension of that core structure. Every field was composed of multiple translucent layers resulting in complex depth and visual texture." -- Bryan Boone...
