About the Item

Stain 20, Original Contemporary Abstract Colorful Energetic Concentric Painting 24" x 18" x 0.625" (HxWxD), Acrylic on Canvas A colorful and energetic painting by artist Katie Schutte, this canvas boasts a pink and yellow color palette that undulates between soft roses to rich reds, with a rich royal blue hue providing contrast. Inspired by the patterning of traditional doilies, the work is also reminiscent of mandalas and meditative concentric patterning. A series of circles appear to be layered on top of one another here, and there is something topographical about the line work that highlights these different forms. Artist Commentary: Uniting unrelated areas of artistry is the main catalyst behind my work. I focus on the exploration and execution of crochet techniques as methods for working with materials and processes associated with jewelry, sculpture, and painting. Interestingly, crochet has become a useful tool in mathematics and science, so my work often contains organically inspired forms because crochet objects can be closely governed by the same mathematical principals and systems commonly found in nature. As a prolific crocheter, I have often noticed how the technique seems to mimic various biological processes such as cell growth and reproduction. In the Stains series, doilies, which are common products of traditional crochet, become substitutes for cells and are 'stained' with acrylic so that their nature might be further scrutinized, similar to how specimens are viewed under a microscope after being prepared on a slide. About the Artist: Katie Schutte was born and raised in Ohio. Her work is the result of combining crochet with various jewelry, painting, and sculpture techniques. As a child, she often saved up to purchase jewelry making kits and taught herself to crochet in high school. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art from Kent State University in 2006 and her Master of Fine Art from Miami University in 2011. While at Miami, she taught Jewelry and Metalsmithing courses to students from various majors and received several grants and awards. Her work has been shown in exhibitions organized by the Enamelist Society, the Ohio Craft Museum, and the Rock Island Art Guild, among others. She had a solo show at the Nohr Gallery on UW-Platteville’s campus, and her work was included in Envision Arts’ digital exhibition Art in Isolation: A Contemporary Collective, in the book Mastering Contemporary Jewelry Design, and in the 2021 DuMA Biennial at the Dubuque Museum of Art. She currently lives in the Driftless area of southwest Wisconsin with her husband and a collection of cats.

Commemorate, Original Contemporary Red, White, and Blue Abstract Painting, 2022 30" x 48" x 1.5" (HxWxD) Acrylic and Ink on Canvas A vibrant color palette of blues, reds, and greens flows across the canvas in abstracted forms that imply the movement of water. It looks as though you are looking up at a distorted image through the movement of the ocean overhead. The red, white, and blue color scheme invokes a patriotic feel, as if you are spending the 4th of July on a lake. Artist Commentary: 30 x 48 x 1.5” gallery wrapped with painted edges. Acrylic and Ink on canvas. This is one in my series of emotionally charged coastal abstract artworks. I used saturated vibrant colors and powerful brush strokes, as I do in all my paintings, in order to create a lasting visual impression. Materials: Professional acrylic paints and canvas. Finished with a glaze of UV varnish to protect against sunlight and dust damage. My art pieces are held in private and commercial collections around the world, including the UK, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Asia, France, Canada, Australia and USA. Margaret Juul...
