About the Item
Kay Hartung’s “Cell Samples Grouping 1” is a collection of seven 4 and 6 inch petri dishes filled with encaustic medium and delicately painted with pastel. In varying colors some pieces may contain thread or glass balls which complement the cellular forms. They can be installed on a wall as in this grouping or can lay on a tabletop and be rearranged to one’s liking.
Encaustic painting, a technique used by the ancient Greeks, involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. Encaustic is among the most beautiful of all artists' paints, and is as versatile as any 21st century medium. Due to the fact that beeswax is impervious to moisture, encaustic is incredibly durable; it will not deteriorate, yellow, or darken over time, eliminating the need for protective varnish or glass.
Kay Hartung is a Boston, Massachusetts area artist interested in the intersection of art and science, particularly the microscopic world. Her work has been included in exhibitions throughout the country and is in both private and corporate collections. Hartung is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.

Kay Hartung is an artist interested in the intersection of art and science. She earned her BFA degree in 1974 at Philadelphia College of Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and MFA degree in 1978 at Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York. Her work has been included in exhibitions throughout the country and is in both private and corporate collections.
