Signed lower right, 'Landanyi' for Emory Landanyi (Hungarian-American, 1902-1986); additionally signed, verso, dated 1968 and titled, 'Passacaglia'. Born in Hungary, Emory Ladanyi first attended the University of Budapest Medical School. During his medical residency in Berlin, he was especially influenced by the works of Edvard Munch, forerunner of German Expressionism. During a second residency, in Vienna, he was also exposed to the works of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Kokoschka who were influential in his further development. In 1929, Landanyi arrived in New York and began to practice medicine which enabled him to continue painting.
