Laura Fayer "Sparkle Tide 303" - Abstract Acrylic Painting on Paper

2022

About the Item

Laura Fayer Sparkle Tide 303, 2022 acrylic and Japanese paper on paper 30 x 22.5 in. (fay159) Fayer's mixed media paintings evoke an ephemeral natural world, poised in a delicate balance between dynamism and tranquility, movement and harmony. This original abstract mixed media painting on paper by Laura Fayer features subtle washes of blue, orange, black, and white acrylic paint layered with delicately collaged Japanese paper cutouts. Fayer creates her mixed media works through a combination of printmaking and painting. She uses handmade stencils and stamps to print patterns and lines onto very thin Japanese paper. This is then applied to the canvas in layers and painted over with acrylic medium, which causes the paper to dissolve into transparency. Only the printed marks remain, interspersed with rich swathes of acrylic paint. Throughout this process, the surface of the canvas undergoes constant changes, hundreds of micro-decisions, revisions, additions, and overlays. The resulting effect creates a world of constant movement and change, where printed images float and weave among the painted washes of color. “I rely on visual memories of childhood years living in Japan and allow the memories to help shape my sensibilities,” says Fayer. “When I think back on these years, the memories are vast and fluid.” Capturing the fluidity of her memories abroad, Fayer’s pieces have a quiet but incessant, organic rhythm. Her imagery is based on waves, wind, moving trees, and music. Although much of Fayer’s work is nature-based and inspired by landscapes, she rarely relies on specific scenes or spaces, preferring to source from abstracted sense-impressions of movement and unusual juxtapositions. Laura Fayer is a graduate of Harvard University in Visual and Environmental Studies and holds a Master of Fine Arts in painting from Hunter College in New York City. She has received a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, as well as grants from International Residencies for Artists and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. She has been a fellow at the MacDowell Colony in NH, Yaddo in Saratoga Springs, NY, and the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art in Omaha, NE.

The discipline of creating a drawing each day is a process, like a written diary, to clear the mind, to declutter thoughts, and to observe patterns. It is a method that allows the mind a freedom to wander and drift. A visual journal becomes a safe space for personal reflection–a self-awareness fueled by the opportunity for contemplation and immersion. The painted surface for the drawings was created by dividing five large paintings into 40 separate pieces. I chose five paintings from my Perspective Series (1993-94), which relied on day-to-day imagery that narrated a story about shifting time and how time anchors our day. The brush strokes of Perspectives are fluid, with muted colors – moving from deep blacks to taupe whites. Dividing these pieces was a means for me to rethink ideas and recurring images in my older work. The very thin gold leaf applied to each piece has a wonderful amber tone. This gold leaf is from Myanmar, where it is used as decoration for Buddha or for the dome of a temple or monastery. In the drawings, the gold element relates to the sense of infinity – like the sky in an enclosed courtyard. An architectural element is a critical component in my studio work that I wanted to carry over into these pieces. I envisioned a courtyard–a safe space that opens up to the sky. Unfolding circles define the beginnings of an open interior space. The process felt open-ended. It was an opportunity to get lost in thought and to give me an opportunity to reflect, muse and declutter my thinking. Then repeat. 40 days...
