Hex-2, Original Signed Contemporary Colorful Geometric Abstract Grid Painting

2017

About the Item

Hex-2, Original Signed Contemporary Colorful Geometric Abstract Grid Painting 36" x 36" x 1.5" Hand-signed by the artist in verso. A bright and vibrant rainbow of colors bleed together in this abstract painting by artist Lindsay Hall. Following a loose and subtly undulating grid pattern, colors flow into one another, creating striking pairings and color groups. Use of a palette knife to apply each color, without concern for clean lines, breaths a life and energy into the work. The use of a grid is reminiscent of the works of Frank Stella, the bold use of colors calls to Abstract Expressionists like Franz Marc, and the overall composition echoes some works by Wassily Kandinsky. Artist Commentary: At the time of this painting’s creation, I was working at a local middle school as an art teacher, but in a math classroom teaching graphing basics. This inspired me to use the concept of graphing in my own work. In the first piece in this min-series, "Hex", I used a random number generator to decide which x- and y- coordinate I would be addressing in the grid I had mapped on the canvas, as well as a random hex-code generator to decide which color would fill it in. Hex-2, however, was created using the hex codes that were generated for Hex, but put into a spreadsheet and sorted alphanumerically. The colors were then applied in a zig zag pattern from corner to corner, resulting in the more organized distribution of color. About the Artist: She has been interested in the arts, in a broad sense, since she was a child. With an innate desire to create, she is constantly pursuing artistic projects in whatever capacity she can.Lindsay received her BA in Art History from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2018 and has since relocated back to her New England roots. Lindsay has always had a passion for sharing her love of art, encouraging others to always be exploring new means of creativity. Her interest and experience both in art history and various studio arts has helped shape not only her understanding of a range of materials and styles, but has also allowed her to better understand the history of the arts and the importance of context in appreciating artistic intention. Though she likes to experiment with a wide range of subject matter, Lindsay has a penchant for living subjects. Much of her work draws inspiration from life on Earth: plants, animals, and people.

Artist commentary: I like to transport my mind to a calming place, inspired by memories, and complex organic elements found in nature. Playing with colors and movement, creating new compositions -- my best work comes when there is freedom to create without any strict plan. With intuition and spontaneity taking over, the result is often a surprise. To me, everything flows, and there is always a sense of balance and harmony that can emerge out of disorder. I love the ambiguous and mysterious nature of abstraction. Through self-discovery and experimentation, I am allowing dynamic energy that manifests through the joy of creating. The result is loose interpretations of anything that exists between the mind and reality, therefore each painting is unique and sometimes inexplicable. About the Artist: Ethereal and calming, Novi Lim's painting transports its audience to a land that is both dreamlike yet familiar. Lim Finds inspiration in the natural world, and seeks to capture their essence through an organic and sensory creative process. In the artist's own words: "Often, imagining a mythical flower that blooms and lit up in the nighttime or seeing something as simple as the calming gradient of the colorful sky at sundown, or the surface of water that glimmers which makes me wonder about the mystery of the deepest oceans -- piqued my creative process and subliminal stimuli." Guided by instinctive feeling, Lim lets the movements of her paintbrush flow as she experiments with atmospheric lighting, transparency, and color. The result is an ambiguous landscape that treads between the subconscious and waking world.
