About the Item
Rosy Granite Coast (II) is an original abstract landscape painting by Mary Scott. This is the second work in a series of four large abstract interpretations of the granite rocks of West Cornwall near Land's End. Created in oil paint mixed with pigment, cold wax and rock powder to give it authenticity, the work is on canvas and is rich in texture and gestural mark-making which gives it an aged feel. Its soft palette of white, cream and grey, as well as pink, duck egg blue, green and sand create a very calming and restful atmosphere. The light tonal top layers are underlain by dark underlayers and the artist has scratched through and scraped back to reveal these. The work was painted as an intuitive response to the artist's long walks along the coast path between Land's End and Porthcurno, home to the Minack Theatre, with the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean beyond. The artist wants to transport the viewer to the stark ancient beauty and ethereal light of the West Cornish coast. Mary Scott says "I was a geologist earlier in my career and I seek my inspiration by walking in ancient landscapes. My process in painting explores the passage of time. In West Cornwall, the granite rocks are more than 275 million years old, and if you look directly west from here, there is no landfall until the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The huge granite boulders and cliffs at the end of the land look out onto the depths of the ocean. I chose the name 'Rosy Granite Coast' because the pinkish hues of the granite of West Cornwall bring to mind the granite rocks of the 'Cote de Granit Rose' of north west Brittany, France, which I met during my early geological career."

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:
Mary Scott paints abstract landscapes to make sense of her emotional response to, and memories of, wild places. Mary is influenced by her early career as a geologist, and in a busy world, she invites the viewer to slow down, and immerse themselves in space and time. Mary Scott's adopted home, Cornwall, and her journeys further afield, provide wonderful natural environments in which to walk, and to absorb and reflect on the landscape. Mary Scott uses a range of materials including acrylics, oils, cold wax, rock powders and natural pigments, to make responses which are fast and slow, bold and subtle, exuberant and quiet, capturing her feelings and memories over many layers. Mary’s approach is intuitively liberating, using both colour (or its absence) and texture freely and responsively. Mary is very conscious of our human smallness in space and time. In a fast-paced world, she finds herself reflecting on the enormity of geological time, slowing down my process to create a glimpse through windows into the past of these ancient landscapes which require nothing from us but stillness. Instead, we humans have imposed our will and errors of judgement, and she is disturbed by environmental degradation heaped on our planet. Mary borrows from the geological world to express this, for example, making marks to represent fractures, fissures and fault lines. In contrast, she uses loose shapes and embracing curves as metaphors for how the Earth has held and sustained life through time. Having recently undertaken a year-long progamme at St Ives School of Painting, she is currently developing her practice through participating in Newlyn School of Art’s ‘Professional Landscape’ mentoring programme.

Mary Scott
Mary Scott artist with Wychwood Art. Mary Scott comments "I have had a lifelong love of being immersed in ancient landscapes and wild places, enhanced by reading earth sciences at university which led to opportunities in my early career to study rocks and landforms both in the UK and abroad. I now enjoy using a variety of mixed media, mainly acrylic paints with inks, charcoal and pencil, to produce semi-abstract landscapes. I particularly enjoy exploring contrasts of colour and light between the ancient solid rock and landscape, and the ever-changing wild energy of sea and sky. My approach to painting is largely intuitive and spontaneous. I may start out with a sense of direction, but then investigate colour, shape and textural mark-making in an open and exploratory way through the course of building thicker and thinner layers of paint and glazes, before scraping back to discover what lies beneath. This process of revealing glimpses, half-hidden things and curious marks helps to develop contrasts between the ancient permanence of rock formations, landscapes developing through time, and the present and future possibilities of the elements above. Recalling memory, experience and emotion of special places, captured and imprinted on my mind, I am also drawn to new discoveries. In the last few years, I have been particularly inspired by the energy of the wild cliffs and coves of the north coast of Cornwall, and return there regularly, always coming away refreshed and invigorated by its dramatic beauty in every season. Following training in collage and acrylic/mixed media painting with teachers here in the Cotswolds, I have engaged in international web-enabled art courses during Covid-19. During late 2020 and 2021, I am excited to be heading down each month to St Ives to take up my place on the year-long mentored Porthmeor Programme at the School of Painting.
