Milly Ristvedt
Daisy - bright, colourful, expressive, gestural abstract, acrylic on paper

1977

About the Item

In this expressive, colourful abstract by Milly Ristvedt a melange of complementary colours appear to dance across the paper. Ristvedt is a master colourist and this painting from the seventies shows her early skills at juxtaposing colour—generous brush strokes of pink, turquoise, green, blue, red, orange and burgundy. Art Critic Barry Lord (Art in America) declared that Ristvedt’s paintings ‘were more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari.’ “(I have an) enduring belief in colour in painting as a language that can speak to mind, body, and soul.” Milly Ristvedt Born in British Columbia, Ristvedt studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University) and had her first solo exhibit at the Carmen Lamanna Gallery in Toronto. In the late 1960s, Ristvedt shared a studio with famed Canadian painter Jack Bush, met art critic Clement Greenberg and was inspired by American painters Jules Olitiski and Frank Stella. Her work has been included in many publications. She was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 2004 and honoured with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. She has won seven Canada Council awards and two Ontario Arts Council awards and had over 50 solo exhibitions and been part of countless group shows. Ristvedt's work can be found in major public collections throughout North America. Milly Ristvedt is represented exclusively by the Oeno Gallery.

  • Odyssey - bright, bold, colourful, abstract expressionist, acrylic on paper
    By Adam Cohen
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
This highly gestural and drip composition on paper balances a kaleidoscope of colour -- grape, magenta, orange, gold, green -- with areas of black and grey. It is a muscular explosion inspired by the classic Greek poem, the Odyssey, which charts the journey of hero Odysseus home to Ithaca after the 10 year Trojan war. This work on paper is currently unframed. However, it can be mounted on panel and framed or framed behind glass. Adam Cohen born in New Jersey in 1959, studied with artist Lilian Marzell, a friend of Willem de Kooning. Cohen earned his BFA at Philadelphia's Tyler School of Art at Temple University which included a year of painting in Rome. Returning to New York he studied at the School of Visual Arts, the Arts Students League and Parsons School of Design. Cohen has exhibited in Italy, Holland, New Jersey, New York and Ontario. His work is in numerous private collections. In 2015, he was awarded the International Art Prize Giuseppe Gambino...

  • Midnight Surprise - bold, colourful, abstract expressionist, acrylic on paper
    By Adam Cohen
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
Hot pink and red intersects with drips and splashes of yellow, magenta and orange in this dynamic acrylic painting on paper. Beneath the energetic surface a scaffold of black completes the composition. Cohen intersects the language Abstract Expressionism with narrative to re-invent the experience of action painting in a contemporary context. This painting on paper is currently unframed. • Proposition (Set of Four) - large, colourful, abstract, acrylic on canvas
    By Milly Ristvedt
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
Milly Ristvedt is making a bold proposition in this dramatic series of four large paintings designed to be displayed together. Each of the four canvases offers a stunning visual dialogue in blocks of colour—reds, purples, orange, greens, blues, black and white for contrast. Ristvedt is known as a master colourist who uses colour to express thought and emotion. Art Critic Barry Lord (Art in America) declared that Ristvedt’s paintings were ‘more insistent than Bush, more consciously structured than Molinari.’ “They are meant to be ‘read’ together in the same viewing space. The conversations between them are intense.” Milly Ristvedt Born in British Columbia, Ristvedt studied at the Vancouver School of Art (now the Emily Carr University) and had her first solo exhibit at the Carmen Lamanna Gallery in Toronto. In the late 1960s, Ristvedt shared a studio with famed Canadian painter Jack Bush, met art critic Clement Greenberg and was inspired by American painters Jules Olitiski...

  • Phoenix - large, colorful, contemporary, abstract, diptych, acrylic on canvas
    By Milly Ristvedt
    Located in Bloomfield, ON
Horizontal bars of blue, maroon, cherry red, pink, lemon yellow, burnt orange and green communicate on a soaked sand-coloured ground in the two panels that form this 9-foot square acrylic diptych painting on canvas. The rhythm of the spaces between the short lengths of colour creates a dialogue of movement that leads the eye upwards through the large picture plane. About the inspiration for the work, the artist wrote: "This is one of the rare paintings that I saw clearly in a dream and painted almost exactly as I saw it. It relates back to the four-panel work, Lock-Up (1972), done a couple of months earlier, where I used the physical break between panels as an edge to anchor some colour bars. In Phoenix, some bars are anchored while others float within the larger ground colour." This painting was included in the exhibition catalogue Milly Ristvedt-Handerek: Paintings of a Decade (1979). Milly Ristvedt, RCA, began her career in Toronto in 1964 after studies with Takao Tanabe at the Vancouver School of Art. In Toronto, during the 1960s and 1970s, she was making and exhibiting large-scale paintings alongside a small but defined group of non-figurative painters who, like Ristvedt, had planted...

  • Daily Drawing Series - 40 Days, original drawings, large scale installation
    By Francie Hester
    Located in New York, NY
The discipline of creating a drawing each day is a process, like a written diary, to clear the mind, to declutter thoughts, and to observe patterns. It is a method that allows the mind a freedom to wander and drift. A visual journal becomes a safe space for personal reflection–a self-awareness fueled by the opportunity for contemplation and immersion. The painted surface for the drawings was created by dividing five large paintings into 40 separate pieces. I chose five paintings from my Perspective Series (1993-94), which relied on day-to-day imagery that narrated a story about shifting time and how time anchors our day. The brush strokes of Perspectives are fluid, with muted colors – moving from deep blacks to taupe whites. Dividing these pieces was a means for me to rethink ideas and recurring images in my older work. The very thin gold leaf applied to each piece has a wonderful amber tone. This gold leaf is from Myanmar, where it is used as decoration for Buddha or for the dome of a temple or monastery. In the drawings, the gold element relates to the sense of infinity – like the sky in an enclosed courtyard. An architectural element is a critical component in my studio work that I wanted to carry over into these pieces. I envisioned a courtyard–a safe space that opens up to the sky. Unfolding circles define the beginnings of an open interior space. The process felt open-ended. It was an opportunity to get lost in thought and to give me an opportunity to reflect, muse and declutter my thinking. Then repeat. 40 days...
