Miriam Traher
What happened to yesterday, large textural abstract on panel, black and white

2023

About the Item

As an emerging self-taught artist, Miriam jumps into her art with sheer inquisitiveness and courage, embracing passion and authenticity throughout her work process. “I like to approach my work with a sense of exploration, constantly adding and subtracting, asking what ifs and what would happen now, until everything has been said and the canvas is quiet. I want to share these feelings for the viewer to discover and enjoy for themselves.” Often combining mark-making with found materials (dress patterns, newspapers) and personal documents (journal entries, to-do lists to name a few), Miriam’s paintings and sculptures display a unique surface rich in visual texture and full of curiosities. Her process involves layering, covering, ripping and collaging onto the surface, only to then go over select areas with more paint and paper, leaving hints of their stories left to be seen. “The story of where we come from, the hints and shouts of our past connected to today, sprinkled with dreams and ideas about tomorrow. I can’t paint about today, my experience and feeling without parts of my past and future dreams being woven throughout. I am constantly working to contrast space and form and is continually drawn to line and colour and the struggle to find the balance, the space and stories waiting to be told.”

My paintings are constructed slowly and deliberately by building layer upon layer of vibrant acrylic colour. My approach is similar in the way areas are carefully developed with a concentration on form and shape, and an attentiveness to light and colour. The image emerges and builds in this way, simplifying details in the process, creating a balance of abstraction, representation and bold, saturated colour. Eaton has had over forty-five solo exhibitions of her work and her paintings hang in numerous private and public collections. Eaton’s work has been acquired by: the New Brunswick Art Bank; Mount Allison University; RBC Dominion Securities; Aliant Telecom; Nesbitt Burns; NB Power; the UNB Art Centre; Toronto Dominion Bank; Atlantic Lottery Corporation; Centre d’Art de Baie-Saint-Paul; and the Masterworks Foundation, among many other public and corporate collections. Early in her career, Eaton was invited to participate in the Symposium de la Jeune Peinture au Canada, in Baie- Saint-Paul, Quebec.
