About the Item

Paul Shapiro began working in an abstract style in 1990, although the Land of Enchantment (and the artist's current home, New Mexico!) remained a major source of inspiration for him. In his abstractions, he seeks to depict a new variety of landscape—one that evokes metaphorical notions of a “pre-matter state.” His works are composed of “energy structures” that possess tangible, vibrational waves. Artist Mary Carroll Nelson has said that Shapiro’s works are "volatile dramas whose colors and outlines are compressed energy held in check by the edges of the paintings." This energy spills from the picture plane and into the real world! The wild originality of Shapiro’s work can be attributed to his inventiveness; in his abstract phase, he has discovered new techniques for applying acrylic paint that create the dazzling effects you see in the Quantum series.
