Peter Wylie Peter Wylie’s paintings show something very different. In his paintings of Erno Goldfinger’s Balfron Tower, the life going on inside the building is as obvious as the proud, stark exteriors. In these paintings, and so it’s implied, in the buildings too, everyday city life and a monumental modernism live together unassumingly. Most of the images we see of Brutalist architecture nowadays – whether in the many Twitter and Instagram feeds that have grown up over the last few years, or in the huge number of coffee-table books on the subject – are of buildings rendered into a kind of sculptural abstraction of de-contextualised black and white forms. These images are, of course, a world away from realities that actually play out in these buildings. What attracted me to Peter Wylie's painting of Robin Hood Gardens was how it differed from these fashionable depictions of Brutalism. The building's geometric facade fills the composition yet also evades the perpendicular geometry of the picture frame. Rather than serving to anonymise, here the building's grid reveals the complexity of what lies within. Each aperture has its own individuality, in the colour of the curtains, how they're drawn, or in the different clothes shown hanging from the line, which corresponds to the person or people whose flat lies behind. Wylie shows the building as alive with use and inhabitation, as a frame for the lives that play out inside it, rather than as a disembodied sculptural object to be marvelled at on a screen. Brutalism is without doubt the most contested of architectural styles. Wylie side-steps the polarisation in views that so often occurs when considering Brutalist buildings by revealing this one in all it's compelling complexity. - Southern Comfort - Photorealistic Sign Painting with Oil and Enamel on CanvasBy Ross TamlinLocated in Los Angeles, CARoss Tamlin's unique photorealistic compositions merge traditional painting methods with modern industrial techniques to create captivating works of art. Using layers of oil and enamel paint, Tamlin creates an illusion of corrugation that adds depth and texture to his pieces. His use of industrial imagery and found objects is a nod to contemporary art, while his bold color palette and incorporation of text is a nod to the Pop Art movement. Tamlin created this one-of-a-kind, vibrant, and colorful painting measuring 42 inches high by 36 inches wide and 1.25 inches deep with oil and enamel paint on canvas. The sides of the canvas are painted in a continuation of the front eliminating the need for framing. In addition to being signed by the artist on the front, the artwork also comes with a certificate of authenticity issued by the art gallery. The certificate guarantees the authenticity and provenance of the artwork. Free delivery is available for those in the local Los Angeles area, and affordable worldwide shipping is available for US and international art collectors. In this artwork, Tamlin reworks the traditional idea of landscape painting by incorporating text and familiar places' names, such as southern U.S. states, painted in large letters over the colorful photorealistic painted corrugated metal. This photorealistic painting by Ross Tamlin is so expertly executed that it perfectly mimics the texture and appearance of corrugated metal, even when seen in person. However, upon much closer inspection from the side at a nearly 90-degree angle, the levelness of the canvas is revealed, allowing you to appreciate the skillful brushwork of oil and enamel paint that gives the amazing illusion of depth and texture. With meticulous attention to detail, Tamlin imparts extraordinary depth to the painting, creating a finish that emulates the shine of polished metal and further enhances the piece's realistic appearance. This original artwork stands as a testament to Tamlin's remarkable talent and precision, demonstrated through the inclusion of even the smallest details, such as the masterfully painted rusty rivet holes. Tamlin's works are represented by Artspace Warehouse Los Angeles and are held in private collections worldwide, including Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore, the USA, Switzerland, and France. - Gel Monochrome #6By Ben WeinerLocated in Greenwich, CTGel Monochrome #6 is an oil painting on prepared paper, sheet size 22 x 14.75 inches, signed, titled and dated verso, 'Ben Weiner Gel Monochrome #6 2019' and framed in a contemporary white frame. Connecting two opposing styles—abstraction and photorealism—Ben Weiner creates hyper-detailed, lush paintings and videos of extremely magnified consumer products, including hair gel, chemical food additives, and deodorant. In his work, he presents such meticulously rendered, close-up views of his subjects that they read as pure abstractions. A through-line in Weiner’s various bodies of work is contemporary culture’s obsession with bodily enhancement through chemical products—whether by using hair products or taking illegal drugs. "The Gel Series presents a virtual environment that is in flux. Based on hair gel, a material that is physically malleable and visually enticing, it has the ability to change one’s physical appearance. In an abstract manner, the painting reflects our current global environment, subject to constant, dramatic change and rapid development- on the one hand through humanity’s ability to alter the face of the earth according to its ideas; on the other through changing environmental conditions and natural disasters". - Ben Weiner Ben Charles Weiner (b. 1980) is a New York based contemporary artist. His work bridges the seemingly opposite styles of hyperrealism, and process-based abstraction. Mr. Weiner has exhibited his work widely in the US and internationally, at institutions including The Carnegie Art Museum, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, The Boca Raton Museum of Art, and The Tarble Art Center. His work is in public collections including Microsoft, Sammlung/Collection, Progressive Insurance, and The Frederick R. Weisman Collection...Category
