Emoship

2020

About the Item

Introducing "Emoship," a captivating painting by the esteemed American artist Rafael Melendez, renowned for infusing existentialism and profound meaning into his creations. This mesmerizing piece, crafted in 2020, is a testament to Melendez's extraordinary ability to breathe life into inanimate subjects, transporting them into a peculiar and surreal realm. Drawing inspiration from his rich American heritage, Melendez weaves intricate narratives that delve into existential questions and the cultural heritage specific to the American experience. "Emoship" masterfully showcases his innovative blending of diverse painting styles from art history and amateur art. This fusion invites viewers to meta-reflect the aesthetic incongruities in post-9-11 and contemporary culture. At the heart of Melendez's artistic expression lies the inspiration of childlike freedom, imagination, and spontaneity. His work parallels American Folk artists and the art of ancient civilizations, where simplicity and sincerity shine through. Melendez's creations embody the essence of these unadulterated artistic forms, capturing the viewer's imagination by constructing new worlds through seemingly naive imagery. In "Emoship," the artist's commitment to childlike expression manifests in the dreamlike ambience and the stranded vessel carrying three passengers, enveloped by a flurry of blue ashes or particles. This depiction evokes a poignant sense of isolation and vulnerability while simultaneously celebrating the limitless possibilities of the creative mind. Created using a combination of acrylic paints and watercolour on Schoeller Durex watercolour paper, "Emoship" measures an unframed 29 x 20 centimetres. Melendez skillfully paints on wet paper, allowing the pigments to interact and create an ethereal effect. As the colours blend and dance across the surface, they testify to the boundless freedom and inspiration underpinning Melendez's artistic philosophy. As Melendez states, "My artistic goal is to craft pieces that resonate with a diverse audience, igniting within them a sense of freedom and inspiration that permeates all aspects of their lives." His work encourages viewers to explore the profound and the commonplace, inviting them to reflect on their existence and the deeper truths beneath their everyday lives, all while inspiring them to embrace the same liberating artistic spirit that fuels Melendez's creations. As a treasured piece for art collectors and devotees, "Emoship" bears Melendez's personal touch, with a blind-stamped impression on the back and his meticulous hand signature, title, date, and initials. This enchanting painting connects with the viewer on multiple levels. It is an exceptional work of art that transcends the barriers of conventional artistic expression, drawing upon the childlike freedom, imagination, and spontaneity found in American Folk art and ancient civilizations.

Rafael Melendez - July 2022 Rafael Melendez (b.1970, USA) renders motifs from high past art with self-taught experimental techniques to produce an unexpected and highly unique visual language riddled with esoteric symbolism. The figures that inhabit his paintings are born from a desire to understand 'abnormal' worldviews, such as Outsider Art, transgressive fiction, and metaphysics. In a constantly evolving practice encompassing drawing, collage, and painting, Melendez strives to visualize/express a moment of unity between beauty and that which doesn't make sense. Melendez starts out as an installation and video artist in 1990s San Francisco. As a student for internationally acclaimed writer Kathy Acker and conceptual artist Nayland Blake...

The art of Philip Wittmann is founded on signals. For him, signs serve as a bridge between abstraction, reality and writing, too. When he was 26 years old, he began painting as a hobbyist using 'pure' abstraction. However, he believed his work lacked a solid foundation upon which to grow. He discovered a book on the origins of the Chinese alphabet, which origins are essentially signs, in 2008 while taking a calligraphy class. The 26 letters of our Latin alphabet are less pictorial than the Chinese characters as we know them now. He discovered that pictorial representation is more prevalent when examining the origins of alphabets—all alphabets, in fact—because there is frequently a similarity between the sign's true meaning and what it is meant to represent. For instance, the symbol for a turtle in the original Chinese script resembles a turtle. Wittmann loves signs as they leave room for interpretation. For instance, if one writes “the sky is blue”, one will make for themself a mental representation of a blue sky, even if each one-off us will probably have some nuance in our own mental representation of that blue sky. On the other hand, a sign can...
