About the Item
Richard Saba, the American abstract painter, is best known for works that relate to Lyrical Abstraction and Abstract Expressionism. He is renowned for his colorful palette, appearing vastly open yet concise and analytically conceived.
The artist’s abstract works juxtapose geometric forms with organic splashes, much like celestial bodies seen through the Hubble Telescope. His use of light, color and non-objective shapes shift through the canvas in a mysterious labyrinth of depth. The subtle color tones and range of Saba’s paint handling give his work its distinctive character. Each canvas is an event, caught at the optimal moment creating spectacular unpredictable compositions.
Saba received his MFA from the University of Washington and attended the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture. His works have been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the National Academy of Design Museum in New York and can be found in many collections including The Ft. Lauderdale Museum of Art. Saba has also been the recipient a Ford Foundation and a Pollock/Krasner Grant.

1965 Ford Foundation Grant Eric Gibson, the contributing editor of Studio International, writes: Richard Saba's work is rooted in the expressionist aesthetic, in particular that of Abstract Expressionism. His particular idiom consists of gesture painting in which vibrant but nuanced color plays a prominent role, the whole ordered by a vestigial Cubist structure. What sets his paintings apart from expressionism new and old is his effort to make his abstract language speak to broader issues about life and human values. That he succeeds is evident in the emotional scope of his work. It runs from broad and confident to restrained and introverted, and is possessed of a range and suppleness rare in contemporary painting. Such is his success at invoking more than simply the conditions of painting that are moments when one feels he has come as close to narrative art as abstraction can. Richard Saba earned his M.F.A. degree from the University of Washington after receiving his B.F.A. at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. His work is in public and corporate collections such as the Museum of Art, Fort Lauderdale, IBM Corporation, and EF Hutton. He has been featured in one-person and group exhibitions across the United States throughout the last 30 years.

After his discharge from military service at the end of February 1946, he briefly studied playwriting with dramatist George McCalmon at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Thereafter, Jenkins spent four years studying with Japanese American artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi in New York City. His first solo exhibitions were held at Studio Paul Facchetti in Paris in 1954 and the Martha Graham Gallery in New York City in 1956. Over the past thirty years, numerous retrospectives have been curated across the globe and Jenkins’ work can found in national collections from Europe and the United States to Israel, Australia and Japan. The diversity of his work springs from Jenkins’ wealth of eclectic influences. Some of his earliest works included what he called "interior landscapes" influenced by ancient natural forms like the caves he visited in the Ozark Mountains in his native-Missouri. Frequent student visits to the Frick Collection in New York fostered a love of the great masters: Bellini, Holbein, Vermeer, Rembrandt, de la Tour, Turner and Goya. In compliment, lingering student visits to the renowned Eastern collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City evoked powerful sympathy for a monumental Chinese fresco...Category
