Scott Williams Psychedelic Animal Vortex Neon Abstract
About the Item
Bright neon abstract with stenciled surreal animals floating amidst a multicolored and patterned vortex-like composition by San Francisco artist Scott Williams (American, b.1956). Signed "Scott Williams" on verso. Displayed in a rustic white painted wood frame. Image size: 36"H x 36"H.
Scott Williams is a San Francisco-based artist best known for his use of spray paint and stencils. He began painting murals in the Mission neighborhood of San Francisco in the early 1980s, covering cars, appliances and other non-traditional surfaces. He worked indoors as well, producing murals at iconic San Francisco venues like Leather Tongue Video, Pedal Revolution, The Chameleon Bar, Amoeba Records, The Lab and DNA Lounge.
As a pioneer of street art in San Francisco Williams was dubbed the “Stencil Godfather” by artist and historian Aaron Noble. He was the subject of a documentary called Spraypaint and he is considered by many a forerunner of the Mission School.
Although best known for his public work, Williams has also maintained a studio practice. In the 1980s and 1990s, he exhibited at alternative and underground spaces in San Francisco like Show and Tell Gallery, Alterpeice at the Offensive, The Adobe Bookstore, and Southern Exposure. As mainstream curatorial awareness of his work grew he was invited to exhibit at Yerba Buena Center of the Arts in San Francisco and Track 16 Gallery in Los Angeles.
In 2005 Williams received the Adaline Kent Award, and was given a retrospective at the Walter McBean Galleries of the San Francisco Art Institute. And in 2012 his heavily painted Mission Street studio was re-created at Steven Wolf Fine Arts.
Williams was born in Santa Barbara. He studied art and anthropology at Santa Barbara City College, Cabrillo College and Sonoma State University. When he moved to San Francisco in the late 1970s he was making art using a xerox copy machine. This led to hand-made comics featuring the characters Robot Dog, Cyber Kitty and Mean Mouse. Since 2000 he has been making traditional artist books featuring dense stencil paintings in hand-bound volumes.
In the early 1980s he lived at the Goodman Building, the last of San Francisco's artist hotels, and was present for its closing and evictions in 1983. This ultimately led to the 1988 passage of Live/Work legislation, which made it easier for artists in San Francisco to live in commercial zones.
