About the Item

Seymour Fogel was an American Modernist artist who started his career as an acolyte of Diego Rivera, a creator of immense social realist murals, graduated to Abstract Expressionism under the tutelage of Arshile Gorky, and ended his career making expressive, gestural, and emotionally intense “transcendentalist” works. On the occasion of Fogel's memorial service in 1985, John Bauer, the Director Emeritus of the Whitney Museum of American Art, said: “I have learned the only thing one could safely expect in Sy's work was the unexpected. He was one of the most restless, driving, curious, and experimental artists I have ever known." Though Fogel is less well known than his peers in the Abstract Expressionist school, the critical community has long recognized his significance. During his lifetime, Fogel exhibited work at the Whitney Museum of American Art an unprecedented eight time. The artist's work is well represented in the collections of major museums, among them: • Metropolitan Museum of Art • Whitney Museum of American Art • The Dallas Museum of Fine Art • National Portrait Gallery, Washington, D.C. • Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden • The State Museum of Louisiana, New Orleans, Louisiana • The Telfair Museum, Savannah, Georgia Although it is untitled, this abstraction by Seymour Fogel is filled with shapes reminiscent of the mammoth standing stones from Stonehenge and other Neolithic ritual complexes in Northern Europe. The work is characterized by Fogel's strong use of color and his grasp of textural contrasts. The greys and reds that dominate the piece are well-paired, with the former providing a necessary foil for the latter. Similarly, Fogel's use of opaque gouache paint lends the forms in this work a somewhat hazy, elusive--nearly diaphanous--quality.
