About the Item
Hand-signed and dated "Franks 44" lower right. This work is in its original hand painted frame, made by the artist. The frame measures 29 ½" x 35 ½" x 1 ¾" and the canvas measures 26" x 32".
The artwork comes from the William Meyers collection [NYC & Los Angeles]. Bill Meyers was an entertainment lawyer who knew and collected the work of many artists from the 1950s-80s.
From the Atlantic Monthly, February 1948 – "the greater proportion of the....exhibition fell into that baffling class called "abstract." In fact – and this is significant – most American work cannot be pigeonholed in one of the many convenient European isms of which the twentieth century has furnished us so long and complicated a list. One of the favorite American modes, expressionism, has furnished heightened color and rhythmic distortions. The result is a stimulating crossing of styles from which emerge several distinct native types. There is evolving a dynamic American picture, built on sensations of speed, movement, and kaleidoscopic change. Younger artists like John Sennhauser, Seymour Franks, and Oscar Fischinger more consciously reflect the pace and tension of American life. –Daniel Catton Rich
