A glorious sunset ablaze on the horizon explodes in a mix of vibrant colours—pinks, yellow, and turquoise dominating the canvas. Ever present in Sharon Kelly’s dreamy abstracts is water featured at the bottom of the frame.
For Kelly, every painting is a celebration of nature as a peaceful retreat. “I create semi-abstract seascape paintings using a combination of acrylics, charcoal, graphite & oil sticks. In this pursuit, I start with the writings of French Romantic poet Gerard de Nerval (1808-1855). Specifically, a poem titled L’Enfance, a depiction of the poet’s childhood. During the Romantic Period, landscape painting's primary function was to provide an escape into a natural world.” Sharon Kelly
She was born in Montreal and studied art history at Queen's University in Kingston, ON. Sharon Kelly is a self-taught artist and maintains a full-time studio by the Rideau river in Ottawa. Known for her elegant, non-figurative paintings inspired by oceans and waterways Kelly has been featured in several solo and group exhibitions since 1999. Her works are in both private and corporate collections.
