About the Item
JAPAN is a 30 x 24 inches, acrylic on canvas social commentary and abstract painting by American, female artist SL Baker. The devastating Tohoku earthquake in 2011 generated JAPAN. Its torn and scratched paint and canvas are intentional. It seems the anguish of helplessness. Signed "SLB" front lower right and framed in a floater frame. This artwork includes a certificate of authenticity issued by the artist.
The images that appear on SL Baker's canvases are a confluence of mindfulness studies and social concern. Working mostly in acrylic and without the use of brushes, Baker paints with her hands. The paintings reference a world view and give a nod to Buddhist practice. The work seems a spiritual query. Her paintings are exhibited in solo, group, and juried shows throughout the Northeastern United States.
SL Baker was born in Princeton, NJ and has been a life-long resident of the local NJ and PA area. She was a public school educator for thirty years and has been a self-employed artist for two decades. Baker is also a published poet and lyricist.

- Landscapes of the Soul and of the Mind XVII , Abstract Expressionist LandscapeLocated in Doylestown, PA"Landscapes of the Soul and of the Mind XVII " is a 44 x 56 inches, original, abstract landscape by American master colorist painter Al Lachman. The artwork is a gallery wrapped canvas, signed "Lachman" in the lower right. It is part of the artist's series "Landscapes of the Soul and of the Mind". The artist puts his thumb upon the pulse of life and records it. In that mystical beat lies the unknown, and he would but make it known. Being both, innovator and spectator, he exists as an intrinsic part of that rhythm. Each painting begins with a premise, and I rarely use the same one twice. It is based on what I see and what I am feeling at that moment. I do not think that painting is about technique. It is about a particular perception of the world around us. The premise creates the periphery of my intent. It is a limitation that gives birth to the creative forces within. - Al Lachman Born in 1936 in the Bronx, NY, Alan Lachman...Category

- Phenomena Greet by Day by Paul Jenkins - Abstract Expressionist paintingBy Paul JenkinsLocated in London, GBPhenomena Greet by Day by Paul Jenkins (1923-2012) Acrylic on canvas 146 x 114.3 cm (57 ½ x 45 inches) Signed lower right, Paul Jenkins Executed in 1994-1996 Provenance: Private collection, New York (acquired directly from the artist) Stern Pissarro Gallery, London Private collection, Netherlands Artist biography Born at Kansas City in Missouri (USA), the multi-media artist, poet and playwright Paul Jenkins studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Art Students League in New York City. After his discharge from military service at the end of February 1946, he briefly studied playwriting with dramatist George McCalmon at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Thereafter, Jenkins spent four years studying with Japanese American artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi in New York City. His first solo exhibitions were held at Studio Paul Facchetti in Paris in 1954 and the Martha Graham Gallery in New York City in 1956. Over the past thirty years, numerous retrospectives have been curated across the globe and Jenkins’ work can found in national collections from Europe and the United States to Israel, Australia and Japan. The diversity of his work springs from Jenkins’ wealth of eclectic influences. Some of his earliest works included what he called "interior landscapes" influenced by ancient natural forms like the caves he visited in the Ozark Mountains in his native-Missouri. Frequent student visits to the Frick Collection in New York fostered a love of the great masters: Bellini, Holbein, Vermeer, Rembrandt, de la Tour, Turner and Goya. In compliment, lingering student visits to the renowned Eastern collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City evoked powerful sympathy for a monumental Chinese fresco...Category
