Mid 20th Century

About the Item

"The Blue Jacket" by Sophie Danielle Rubinstain (French 1922-2018) oil painting on canvas, unframed canvas: 28.5 x 19.5 inches provenance: the artists estate Wonderfully decorative original oil painting by the 20th century French surrealist painter, Sophie Rubinstain (1922-2018). It has impeccable provenance, having come from the artists studio sale in France (it is stamped verso). Wonderfully characterful portrait of this lady in a blue jacket - will make any interior really stand out! Sophie Danielle Rubinstain (1922-2018) was a French artist who led a fascinating life. We are delighted to offer several of her original paintings to you, over the coming weeks, all from the artists estate. Rubinstain served in the French Resistance during the latter part of World War II (from 1943 to 1944), aged just 21 years old. Arrested with her sister Rosa on denunciation and deported to Auschwitz, they were released in May 1944 in Bergen Belsen after the death march and were able to return to Paris on June 5, 1945 (Jewish Combat Organization - Resistance / Rescue France 1940-1945 - Editions Autrement - Memories Collection p 107). As an artist, Rubinstain was described as an "essentialist" in the National Directory of Fine Arts, though her work was most often exhibited in the Expressionism and Symbolism sections of the main French salons. From the 1950's onwards, she exhibited with the: Salon of French Artists, Salon of Realities News, Salon des Independants, Exhibition of Free Art, Member of the Union of Women painters and Sculptors..... as well as the following galleries.... Galerie Renoir and Galerie Nouvelle Europe Brussels 1958, Galerie Silvagni Paris Quai Voltaire 1952 and several times at the Galerie Bernheim Jeune. Her work was the subject of many articles in The Artistic News - The Journal of the Amateur Art - The Artistic and Literary Awakening .... as well as in the Daily Mail in 1952...."A strong perception, dynamically expressed with colors with attractive contrasts. This is the essentialism developed by this artist. Authentic art, translating symbolically, with a rare chromatic intensity, the human dramas, the spiritual elevation. Quality and depth invite to meditation". Condition Report: The painting is in overall good condition. The canvas is slightly loose to the stretcher.

    By Darlene Cole
    Located in Montreal, Quebec
Childhood, a reoccurring theme in Darlene Cole’s work, is represented by prepubescent girls and boys, engaged in some type of action. Without adult supervision, these activities confer on Cole’s children an adult-like aura, empowering them. The artist cites Neil Postman’s 1982 book about the decline in innocence in American culture The Disappearance of Childhood as a text that informs her work. In it, Postman argues that communications technology, such as the invention of the television and later, the Internet, contributed to children losing their innocence, thus transforming them into young adults. A source of inspiration for Cole are the works of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of English painters, poets and critics, founded in 1848. They studied nature attentively, employed vivid colours and depicted unconventional-looking women. Just like in Pre-Raphaelite works, the girls in Cole’s paintings embody enigma, distance, and beauty. The past, in general, is a great source of inspiration for the artist. Cole’s cottage, or ‘artist’s retreat’ as she calls it, was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Since she kept all the original furniture and linens intact, the cottage, on the side of a lake, seems to belong to the past. Nature, another omnipresent theme in Cole’s work, is in many works represented by flowers, such as pink David Austin roses...
