About the Item
Mixed media.
Unique piece, 1 of 1.
Sylvain Tremblay was born in 1966 in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. After earning a degree in graphic design, he worked as an illustrator for a number of years, then in 2002, he made a major career change, deciding to devote himself to painting full time. His work has been shown in Canada and the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. He is represented by a number of galleries on three continents, including Opera Gallery, Galerie d’art Iris, and Thompson Landry Gallery.
In addition to creating works for gallery presentation, Tremblay takes part in live painting events and projects that bring art outside the walls. Examples are his participation at the 10th anniversary of the Thompson Landry Gallery in 2016 and in Arab Fashion Week in Dubai in 2015. He participated in “Personal Structure”, an exhibition conceived in the framework of the prestigious Venice Biennale of Art 2017. In the same year, he presented the world premiere of his Leonardo da Vinci documentary at le Château du Clos Lucé (grand master last home) and launched his second book: SYLVAIN TREMBLAY. In 2014, he created a grand fresco in the Dubai desert by going up in a hot-air balloon and throwing sand of three different colours down onto a canvas placed on the ground, creating a portrait of Sheikh Zayed below, thereby expressing his commitment to promote the local community and traditions of the United Arab Emirates. His fascination with humanity led Tremblay to spend the years 2012 to 2015 in an intensive exploration of the male-female duality, seeking out intersex individuals in France, Morocco, Taiwan and South Africa. These encounters gave birth to a number of unique pieces, an artistic video, and a book, titled NO GENDER.
In fall 2016, he was one of three artists who represented Canada for the G20 in China. In 2012, Tremblay was the guest of the Canadian Embassy at the fourth edition of Canada Week in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Two years previously, the Canada Council for the Arts and Cirque du Soleil presented Tremblay’s work in the Canada Pavilion at Expo 2010 in Shanghai. In 2005, he showed at the second Beijing International Art Biennale. That same year, he represented Quebec at the Semaine du Québec in Belgium, with the participation of the Quebec General Delegation in Brussels. He also presented a work in the “Uncensored” show organized by The New Yorker magazine in New York, and in the sixth Art International Zurich contemporary art fair, where he won first place for four continents in 2004.
Sylvain Tremblay was based from 2012 to 2016 in Dubai where he taught the History of Modern Art at the Canadian University, and has now lived and worked in New York since the beginning of 2018.

- Contemplating Cultural Restoration, Fillipus Sheehama, charcoal & acrylic paintBy Fillipus SheehamaLocated in Windhoek, NAContemplating Cultural Restoration, 2021. Mixed media: charcoal and acrylic paint on Fabriano Fillipus Sheehama's latest large-scale sculptural textiles have grown out of an exploration of recycled materials and their link to overconsumption. The materials are sourced from under-maintained and largely impoverished areas of Namibia. His artistic process has evolved to incorporate organic waste materials. Indigenous makalani fruits are often used as a food source and to brew alcohol. In these works the discarded makalani piths are cut in half and hand-stitched together alongside flattened metal bottle caps and shards of animal bone. The use of these discarded materials also points to the agricultural processes that sustain subsistence farmers. Sheehama highlights issues of land (re)distribution as years of Apartheid and colonialism carved up and cut off access to much of the arable land in Namibia, leaving the majority of the population scrambling for resources. The patchwork of different materials and textures speaks to the segregation of land and people, and the need to use our natural resources and knowledge to unify for a more just and fair society. Each artwork is both a reflection of society as well as a critique of contemporary living. He is preoccupied with ideas of wholeness, thinking about the relationship between individual and collective identity. The materials he chooses to use en masse- discarded bottle tops, plastics, old school desks...Category
