About the Item
Biagga (Sea Wind), painted viscose and linen, 67" x 71", 2010. Contemporary Abstract Tapestry Painting, Wall Sculpture.
Ulla-Maija Vikman (b. 1943, Oulu, Finland) is a fiber artist whose work merges techniques of both weaving and painting.
Artist Statement: "Threads stretched like a warp form a surface on which I paint like a painter on a canvas. I repaint and wash two or three times to get tones I want. Viscose is rewarding to dye and it hangs beautifully. It is shiny and reflects light, ideal for depth and vividness of color. My inspiration is the material itself. The vertical threads have their own natural rhythm complemented by the horizontal patterns. Like a weave, the pieces are based on vertical and horizontal elements. Though the working field is free to be painted, I mostly stick to horizontal stripes. It could be the influence of the weaving tradition, or it could be caused by my need for harmony - or maybe it is a part of my “language”. I always hang my work at some distance from the wall so that gives the impression of being in free fall, floating in the air. The slightest breeze or draft makes the threads move, affecting both the light and the form of the work. This kinetic effect brings the piece to life within its environment."

- Nocturnal Parts - abstract geometric contemporary modern painting reliefLocated in Doetinchem, NLNocturnal Parts is a unique one-of-a-kind contemporary modern painting relief by Dutch artist Sander Martijn Jonker. It is a relief consisting of two open spherical parts with an intriguing matte black finish, perhaps a bit mysterious but very beautifully made. It can be hanged in two different ways, with the opening between the two spherical elements either facing away or facing the observer. Depending where the light comes from one might decide for the one or the other hanging method. Sander Martijn Jonker (1977, Netherlands) graduated from the St. Joost School of Art & Design in Den Bosch, The Netherlands. He primarily makes three-dimensional reliefs that play with the tension between abstraction and representation, surface and space. Light, shadow and their elusive ever-changing properties play an important role. Although the resulting works are abstract, he uses everyday reality as a starting and/or reference point. His work is created through forms of manipulation, distortion, repetition and simplification. Some works arise from the repetition of a simple movement or form, others are made by exploring how far he can go with the deformation and manipulation of the material, after which he captures and preserves the shape. He experiences daily life as uncontrollable and at times confusing. In order to cope with that, he is always looking for patterns and has gradually developed various rituals and ways of control, hoping they can offer him certainty and reassurance. His work and person are inextricably connected. He makes the things he makes because he doesn’t have a choice. He is trying to get a grip...Category
