About the Item
As a young artist, William L'Engle traveled to Spain and spent time at the Prado Museum copying paintings by Diego Velázquez. The influence of the legendary Spanish painter is clear in L'engle’s early work.
L'engle was greatly interested in the body in motion and in representing it solely by means of line. Frequently, his subjects were entertainers, circus performers, athletes, and dancers. Later, L'engle’s work aligned more closely with the modernist movement, particularly in Provincetown, and the work of Gerrit Beneker, Karl Knaths, Blanche Lazzell, and Agnes Weinrich.
This abstract weather map represents a compelling period for the artist. It is one of many L'engle painted based on weather maps in daily newspapers. Confoundingly abstracted, these weather maps evoke musical notation, amplified matter, human faces - almost anything but the weather. They provoke questions about the reductiveness of all things condensed to represent something complex, and how the complexity of art relates to the complexities of the natural world.
