About the Item
A Sculptor's Full Circle, Yoichi Tamaki at Alex - Washington Post (April 1, 1999).
Judging from his lively exhibition at Alex Gallery, Yoichi Tamaki would have felt at home in the Washington Color School. The 50-year-old Japanese painter splits his time between Tokyo and Paris, and his oil, acrylic and sand on linen works combine elements of contemporary Western painting with Asian influences.
Tamaki's paintings look like a cross between Mark Rothko's fields of color and Pat Steir's corrosive, drippy abstractions, with a dose of Japanese calligraphy thrown in. There's plenty of action in the works: Paint is splattered, dripped and flung onto the surface. And mixing sand with the pigment creates some interesting textures, giving one work a grainy metallic sheen, sparkling like a field of diamonds in another.
But it's the colors that really stand out. In one untitled work, a field of strong, unmodulated blue seems to float above its background of aquamarine as if both had positive polarity. Form and texture recede as the color pulls the viewer into the picture. It's not a new trick, but Tamaki pulls it off quite well.
