About the Item
This dynamic contemporary circular painting in bright white is by Yvonne Lammerich. The Canadian artist has been exhibiting her uniquely bold work both nationally and internationally for decades. Lammerich is known for her provocative experimental work that often plays with the viewer’s perception. What is real and what is illusion?
The actual scale of the circle is related to the artist’s body—who created this image by extending her arms, paintbrush in hand and moving across the surface of the canvas.
A close examination of this work reveals circles within circles emanating from a defined target. One of a limited series.
“The circular target is not just an arbitrary visual model for a focal point of arrival but is itself inscribed by the primary actions of the body in its fullest extension on a surface.” Yvonne Lammerich
"Yvonne Lammerich's work resists traditional terms when speaking about painting. Her early work defined new terms for pictorial space within painting practice no longer centred on the primacy of vision.” James Campbell, Galerie Clara Maria Sels, Düsseldorf
Yvonne Lammerich was born in Germany in 1946. She emigrated with her family to Canada in 1959. Lammerich attended the Ontario College of Art and also received a master’s in art history from Concordia University in Quebec. She furthered her studies and acquired a Ph.D. from the Université du Québec à Montréal. While pursuing her own art, she also taught at York University, OCAD University, the University of Lethbridge, and Zayed University in Dubai. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally including at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art and is held in numerous private and public collections.

As a teenager, he was encouraged to pursue a career as an artist, subsequently creating his first real paintings around the age of 14. He was particularly influenced by a Life magazine article from 1961 on the Abstract Expressionists, most notably: Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Hans Hofmann, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Robert Motherwell and Franz Kline. After stints at the Art Students League, the Kansas City Art Institute, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the University of California at Berkeley, Landfield’s professional career as a painter began in New York in 1965. The following year, after completing a major series of hard-edge border paintings, success as a painter began to materialize. The famous architect and collector Philip Johnson and the collector Robert Scull each acquired large paintings works, as did the Sheldon Memorial Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska. In 1967, Landfield was invited to participate in the Whitney Annual at the end of the year. His work attracted considerable attention, and he was invited to participate in important group exhibitions at the Bykert, Bianchini, and Park Place Galleries in New York.
