About the Item

Bill Haveron is a homegrown Texas artist who currently resides under the steeple-high pines in the state’s vast swampy Piney Woods. Born in Bryan, Texas in 1957, Haveron aspired to be an artist even as a child. Haveron’s childhood—one spent imbibing tall tales and marinating in the pungent atmosphere of East Texas’ lively honky-tonks—gave him a distinctive outlook on the world and the characters one encounters in it. It would be a mistake to see Haveron’s art as an example of provincial self-congratulation, however; Haveron may live and thrive in the Piney Woods but his art speaks to broad, human concerns and is heavily indebted to literature and philosophy. His works have featured sly, subtle commentaries on everything from Socrates to Thomas Jefferson. Admittedly, the artist strives to puncture any pretensions that creep into his work. He once told an interviewer, “I think of being an artist as being half priest and half gunfighter because you got to have a whole lot of faith and you got to work alone…I use irreverence in my work but it’s to show the way to reverence.” Haveron drifted into Dallas when he was younger. His talents were quickly recognized by the city’s galleries and he was tutored by some of its most skilled artists. This whirlwind education was uncongenial to Haveron’s reclusive, ascetic temperament and he quickly retreated into the seclusion of his beloved Piney Woods. “Mulberry,” an enigmatic work, is representative of Haveron’s approach to art creation and suggestive of his reflective temperament. Though the viewer is certain the work contains some riddled, hidden meaning or that it functions on an allegorical level apart from an aesthetic one, Haveron has left few obvious clues about his intentions. “Mulberry’s” meaning is an intentionally elusive one, heightening its considerable visual appeal. Though Haveron keeps his distance from the Dallas art scene, he has continued to have success in the city and elsewhere, mounting solo exhibitions at the Gerald Peters Gallery and the Contemporary Art Center of Fort Worth. He has participated in group exhibitions in the Museum of San Francisco in San Francisco, and in Dallas’ Meadows Museum of Art. His works can currently be found in the permanent collections of the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the El Paso Museum of Art, the Modern Art Museum of Austin, and the de Young Art Museum in San Francisco.
