George Denholm Armour
Portrait of an Irish Red Setter Dog - British Victorian animal art oil painting

1886

About the Item

This gorgeous British Victorian dog portrait oil painting is by noted animal artist George Denholm Armour. Painted in 1886 it is a lovely portrait of a red Irish Setter dog. The dog is lying on a mat with a palm pot plant behind it. From the light and the edge of the curtain the dog is probably gazing out some French doors onto the garden. The brush work on the dog's fur and the light catching its face are superb. The contrast of the rich red and the yellow wall make this a very vibrant, empathic oil painting by a much respected Victorian animal artist. Signed and dated 1886 lower right. Provenance. Belgian collection. Condition. Oil on canvas, 31 inches by 24 inches unframed and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a beautifully ornate gilt Barbizon period frame, 38 inches by 33 inches framed and in good condition. George Denholm Armour (1864-1949) was a British painter. He was born in Waterside, Lanarkshire, Scotland on 30 January 1864. He grew up in Liverpool and went to school in Fife. He graduated from the University of St Andrews and the Edinburgh College of Art. He moved to Tangiers, Morocco to paint and buy horses. When his money ran out, he moved to London and shared a studio with Phil May. He met Joseph Crawhall on a hunting and painting holiday and they both ran a stud farmhouse in Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, England. In 1898, he got married, and Crawhall was his best man at the wedding. He did illustrations for The Graphic, Punch and Country Life. In 1910, he studied military equestrianism at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria. In 1913, he became an honorary member of the Meadowbrook Polo Club. During the First World War, he commanded the remount depot in Salonika from 1917 to 1919. When his wife died in 1924, he remarried to Miss Violet Burton. They lived in Malmesbury. He became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy. He died in Wiltshire on 17 February 1949. Some of his paintings are owned by the City of Glasgow, the National Trust, the Aberdeen Art Gallery, the National Galleries of Scotland and the University of Edinburgh. His painting, A Polo Match, was sold at Christie's in 1988.

  • Race Horse Phoenix with Guilermo Kemmis - British 19th century art oil painting
    Located in London, GB
This superb British 19th century equine oil painting is by noted horse lover, George Gascoyne. Painted in 1889, this French born chestnut horse is Phoenix. While he was essentially a miler, Phoenix (sometimes seen spelled as “Phenix”) came from a family that had produced Classic winners in France at up to 15 furlongs. He proved an excellent sire following his export to Argentina, becoming the foundation stallion for Guillermo Kemmis' breeding program at Haras Las Rosas. This painting is from his time in Argentina with Kemmis. Phoenix is depicted in a flat landscape against a vivid blue sky. A gentleman, possibly his owner, Guillermo Kemmis, stands smiling in front of him holding his reigns and gives perspective to how tall Phoenix is. Although in profile, Phoenix is turning to look at the viewer, his chestnut coat gleaming and his anatomy perfectly portrayed. This is a superb Victorian equine portrait of a noted horse in the 19th century and is a lovely example of Gascoyne's work as a horse lover. Signed with initials and dated GG 1889 lower right. Provenance. Inscribed "Phenix" (Cymbal -- Belle-Etoile) by George Gascoyne, Sittingbourne, Kent to reverse. Condition. Oil on canvas, 36 inches by 28 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a wooden frame, 44 inches by 36 inches and in good condition. HORSE BIOGRAPHY Phoenix (FR) 1875 – 1893? Chestnut horse. Cymbal (GB) x Belle Etoile (FR), by First Born (FR) Family 25. Race record. Complete record unavailable but as follows: 1878: Won Prix de la Forêt (FR, 1600mT, Longchamp) 1879: Won July Cup (ENG, 6FT, Newmarket July). Won Rous Memorial Stakes (ENG, 8FT, Ascot). Won Bunbury Stakes (ENG, Newmarket). 2nd Rosebery Handicap (ENG, Epsom) 1880: Won Lennox Stakes (ENG, Goodwood) As a stallion: Phoenix was the Argentine champion sire six times, reaching the top in 1887-1890, 1892 and 1895. Notable progeny: Hawk Eye (ARG), Lenape (ARG), Marinera (ARG), Osiris (ARG), San Martín (ARG), Surplice (ARG) Connections: Phoenix was owned by Comte Frédéric de Lagrange. Pedigree notes: Phoenix is outcrossed through five generations. Sired by Cymbal, a son of 1861 Derby Stakes winner Kettledrum, he is out of Belle Etoile, whose half sister Garenne (by Gladiator or Ethirion or Freystrop) is the second dam of 1894 Prix Royal-Oak (French St. Leger) winner Gouvernail and the third dam of 1894 Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby...
