J Langlois is a very well known British artist famous for his paintings of terriers very much in style to the Armfield family of painters. Born in Middlesex, England, Langlois was a 19th century artist who is famous for his paintings of terriers and sporting dogs usually engaged in chasing rabbits and rats! This subject was very famous during this period of time, thanks to a growing love for domestic animals in England, when many artists were commissioned to do a portrait of them. One of Langlois’ circle was his contemporary artist, George Armfield (British, circa 1808-1893), whose ability to depict the subjects very realistically created a huge demand for his work, this style and subject matter. Several Langlois’ artworks have been sold at auction, including Christie’s and Bonhams. Works by Langlois can be found in many private and public collections all around the world.
