Johansen Newman
The Coming Storm of Words, Original Painting

2020

About the Item

Artist Comments
Artist Johansen Newman pictures a contemplative portrait of a woman writing a letter. It raises the question of which of the images on the wall, if any, the note is connected to. Five turtle doves surround her - a symbol of affection and often a term of endearment. "Each element of the painting has a meaning for me," shares Johansen. She quotes a stanza from After Done by Robert Blazer Stewart as a reference to the title:"And I love the coming storm of words.Slower and duller than desire."

  • Sleeping Under the Stars, Original Painting
    By Andrea Doss
    Located in San Francisco, CA

    Artist Comments
What do sleeping dragons dream of? Starry nights and moonlit trees Castles tall and oceans deep Dancing on the whispering wind And flying to where the sunlight bends

    About the Artist
Andrea Doss discovered that there were stories hiding in her paintbrush, and has been bringing them to life with her art ever since. Her paintings capture the essence of children’s books and lullabies. Andrea’s love for fairytales and storytelling is evident in her personification of animal friendships and activities. Adventurous, sweet, and whimsical are appropriate words to describe the artist’s fanciful characters. Andrea lives in Texas and works from her home, always closely supervised by her opinionated one-eyed cat named Poe.

  • Not as straight forward as you think
    By Jenny Day
    Located in New Orleans, LA
Retreating from the stress and chaos of the last year, I created another landscape; populated by an army of friendly creatures. Here the burdens of coronavirus, climate change, and political division are dismissed by hot pink kittens that arc gracefully through meter showers and owls that bury into beds of daffodils. In this place worry is edged out by the fantastic and mystical snails trail neon candy canes through the scorched earth. The apocalyptic is supplanted by the surreal and the allegorical. Anxiety followed me. The escapist reflects and distorts its shadow world, the real, a funhouse mirror...
