John Ahlberg, Two Polar Bears Sleeping in the Arctic. Signed and Dated 1910

1910

About the Item

A fine painting by John Ahlberg, signed and dated 1910 of two polar bears sleeping on the ice in the Arctic with icebergs in the background and some floes of ice floating the open sea. The Arctic was a popular topic at the turn of the century with many expeditions occurring during the end of the 19th century and early 20th century. John Edvard Ahlberg (1881 - 1962), was a Swedish soldier (lieutenant colonel) and painter. He was the son of lecturer Fredrik Ahlberg and Selma Maria Östman. Ahlberg studied art at Althin's painting school in Stockholm and during a stay in Paris. Together with Pehr Liedbeck, Carl Einar Fredriksson and Erik Jönsson, he exhibited in Örebro in 1917. His art consists of genre and portrait paintings, often of officers. Ahlberg is represented at Miliseum which is a museum dedicated to the history of the Swedish military. Polar bears occur on the sea ice in the Arctic Ocean and surrounding islands and land areas. Regions with a larger population of polar bears are northern Alaska, Canada's arctic islands, Greenland, Svalbard, Franz Josef Land, northern Siberia and Wrangel Island. The southernmost population lives on James Bay in Canada.

This painting, by Christian Berg (1893-1976) is quite interesting and unusual for his works. It is signed "Ch. Berg" and dated 1918. He was educated at the Technical School and Althin's painting school in Stockholm 1911–1914. In the years 1914–1917 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and started with animal painting in the spirit of Bruno Liljefors. Our painting is from this period just after he finished his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 1921, he studied in Berlin and Dresden which was followed by a trip to Egypt in 1925. In the same year he moved to Paris and had a studio on rue Guénégaud. He studied with André Lhote and his interest in cubism was awakened.
