Julie Ferris
"Magnificat" - American Realism - Equine - Horse Painting - Rosa Bonheur

2022

About the Item

"Magnificat" is a large-scale portrait of a Westphalian mare. This painting features rich and textured hues of tan, yellow, brown and white. Echoing the spirit of masters of Equestrian art like Stubbs, Gericault, Bonheur and Munnings, Atlanta-native Julie Ferris brings her own contemporary style, perspective and expression to her equine portraits. Paying close attention to the formal aspects; line, color, shape, scale and composition, she creates portraits that are realistic, yet painterly. Ferris is interested in capturing the duality she sees in her subjects. “I love how the horse personifies the contrast of steel and velvet,” Ferris says, “because even though they are strong and powerful, horses also possess a gentle and soft nature.” Her latest body of work “Good Mare” is a series of paintings that explore the equestrian saying, “there’s just nothing better than a good mare.” Female horses have a stigma that they are difficult and opinionated, but if a rider is partnered with a ‘good one,’ together they will develop an unbreakable bond and trust. Good horses are often referred to as ‘saints,’ because they are loyal, take care of their rider, forgive their mistakes and give their all. A good mare’s trust must be earned. Ferris received a BFA in Painting with a Minor in Equine Studies from the Savannah College of Art & Design in Savannah, Georgia. Her work has been commissioned and collected across the United States and internationally.
