Katherine Kean
Two Saffron Finches and Bougainvillea contemporary animal floral painting

2022

About the Item

Brightly hued Saffron Finches, always in pairs, with pink Bougainvillea. Hints of a geographical reference point, visible in the middle of the painting. Measures 36 x 18 inches. Oil on gallery wrapped linen with hand painted edges. Wired for installation with finger-friendly coated wire and signed by the artist. Includes an official certificate of authenticity. Katherine Kean’s paintings seek moments of breath-taking transition in nature; a gathering of clouds or changing tides; times when the elements of the landscape combine with the alchemy of imagination to illuminate the world of heightened mood and sensation. Her work aims to capture these fleeting moments in time and reveal the serene center that can arise in the midst of nature's turbulence. Katherine Kean has exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States, and has been acquired by many private and corporate collections. She has been honored to have her work selected for Bloomingdales in Santa Monica, California, Schiffer's 100 Artists of the West Coast II, Paint America's Paint the Parks, Manhattan Arts Healing Arts International's Celebrate the Healing Power of Art and the National Weather Center 2015 Biennale.

  • A Dazzle of Zebras
    By Carole Garland
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
Zebras are one of the most interesting and amusing of African animals. They share the genus Equus with horses and donkeys. In a group it is believed their dizzying stripes confuse prey - or perhaps make them dizzy. An artist's delight, zebras' black and white stripes call out to be painted. Taking it a step further, Carole Garland attempts to confuse the viewer with a "Now you see it, now you don't" look at the zebras standing in a streambed in South Africa. Painted in oil on a 30"x40" wood panel, the wood sides serve as a frame around the painting. Carole Garland graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois and studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas in Mexico City. She has worked privately with Keith Finch and Rick Pekar, taken workshops with numerous plein air painters and was mentored by David Gallup...

  • Coral Column
    Located in Palm Desert, CA
Alongside my wife Nansi, I have been lucky to explore some of the most beautiful and pristine coral reefs in the world. People often think we take pictures of the corals and paint them, but that is far from our process, which involves (at least in this case) working from an abstract design and weaving in memories and imagination until I had this image resolved. This painting is scheduled to be a part of our (Nansi’s and mine) international museum exhibition highlighting the beauty and fragility of our coral reef ecosystems, kicking off at the new ICONIC Museum in Texas in 2024. David C. Gallup has devoted his life to the study, teaching, and creation of art. He graduated from Otis/Parsons in Los Angeles in 1990, and soon found himself supervising a staff of over thirty artists under pop art legend Hiro Yamagata on the Earthly Paradise collection and other projects. He began plein-air painting on mornings, weekends and after work, and eventually left his friend and patron Yamagata to pursue a career as a gallery artist. For over a decade, he was the Vice President of the historic California Art Club...

  • Tricks - Original Oil Painting, Anthropomorphic Scene with Cat and Seagull
    By Wendy Vaughan
    Located in Chicago, IL
In this fantastical painting animals reign supreme. An enrobed cat observes/directs as a seagull deftly flies through a suspended hoop. Wendy Vaughan seems to infuse her artwork with mystical powers. Backgrounds are layered with symbols and clothing vibrates with magical floating shapes. Her choice of colors are punched up to a level of saturation as to make her work seem otherworldly. Prominent colors in this painting are bright blues in the water, soft oranges in the cat's fur, and purple, gold and pink in the cat's garment. This artwork is framed in dark wood with painted gold inset. Wendy Vaughan Tricks oil on linen 23h x 29w in 58.42h x 73.66w cm Wendy Vaughan (maiden name Wendy Kornmiller) grew up in West Bloomfield, outside of Detroit, where her father was a car designer for Chrysler and one of the original designers of the Ford Thunderbird...
