About the Item

ABOUT Matt Kinney was born in Georgetown, Massachusetts. He attended Pratt Institute and The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, graduating in 1998. After graduation, Kinney began ink painting in New York City, plein air, and in the studio with nude models. In early 2000’s, Scottish artist and mentor John Brazenall taught Kinney the fundamentals of Resin Sand Casting Bronze and Aluminum sculpture at New Foundry in Brooklyn, NY. In 2003 he relocated to Beacon, NY where his work continued at the Polich Art Foundry. His practice includes ink painting, sculpture, and photography. Painted with Japanese Sumi ink on thick, handmade watercolor paper, Kinney’s Figure Series illustrates the inextricable interplay of light and dark captured in ever-shifting subjectivity shaped by shadow. His work largely deals with ideas of waking trance, dream state, and ancient animistic views of the world. Although he typically paints with brushes and watercolor, Tasmania, Spiral, 2009 in the current exhibition at the Robin Rice Gallery is an exception; Kinney finger-painted this artwork with clay while traveling in the interior wilderness of Tasmania. • Jungle (Jaguar)
    By Matt Kinney
    Located in Hudson, NY
This new series of painting is an exciting transition for Kinney as he is best known for assemblage and sculpture. “Anim”, the Latin root word of animal, means life, soul or breath. This exhibition features select large-format monochromatic oil paintings on stretched canvas and wood panels. On view as well are works on paper with Japanese Sumi Ink, which inspired the oil paintings. Kinney has been looking at pre-historic cave paintings as well as animals depicted therein, such as the Chauvet caves in Nice, Southern France. Emerging from the inextricable interplay of light and dark, Kinney’s black and white ink paintings capture the ever-shifting subjectivity shaped by shadow. Cast in Japanese Sumi ink, each unique painting explores the trajectories of human and animal, natural and architectural form- what is revealed or hidden? A variety of hand-torn, heavy weight papers add textural dimension to each mark and brush stroke, as well as through the immediacy of brushstrokes to depict the action within the artwork In his latest collection of works, Kinney explores animal form and meaning as seen in both contemporary and ancient times. In “Savanna (Zebras) ”, a stampede of zebras is depicted through oil paint on wood panel. Animal populations in regions like the horn of Africa today face the loss of their natural habitats due to extreme draught. He explores the deep imprint they leave behind and the interconnectedness of humans and animals in the world. With the balance of nature at stake, Kinney’s paintings underscore the importance of the relationship between the natural environment and civilization. Matt Kinney...

  • "Hummingbirds and Honeysuckle", ink and watercolor painting on paper
    By Jesse Lambert
    Located in New York, NY
78” x 42” ink and watercolor on paper, signed on reverse by the artist, Jesse Lambert. The abstract ground of washes of green, blue, orange and rose tones over white create an active field of color. The imagery of hummingbirds and bird feeders amongst graphic representation of trees, leaves and branches are created with defined black inkwork lines. Pattern and repetition with the vertical tree trunks, are intersected with cross sections of lumber with beautiful wood grain. This large scale painting is featured in "Shelter, Scatter, Feed" a solo show of new works by Jesse Lambert. Front Room Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition of new works on paper by Jesse Lambert, titled, "Shelter, Scatter, Feed". This is Jesse Lambert’s second solo show at Front Room Gallery. In this exhibition, Lambert continues to explore themes of shelter, safety, and the passing of time. His ink and watercolor paintings on paper depict abandoned scenes in an abstracted rural space. In previous works, Lambert combined the spaces of domesticity and the natural world, with an occasional appearance of the human figure. His new work contemplates the new reality under COVID-19, and continues to evoke the universal need for shelter and protection. In these paintings Lambert imagines the world abandoned by human inhabitants, reclaimed by nature- as if the world has moved on, without us. In this series,
Lambert’s familiar color washes have taken on a more natural hue. Lambert presents a grouping of medium sized paintings which explore the theme of birdhouses as a metaphor for human needs. The birdhouses are falling apart or incomplete, dysfunctional structures failing to meet their stated function. In his larger paintings, remnants of built structures of unknown use are scattered across a forested setting. Strips or planks of wood are nailed to tree trunks. A broken ladder promises ascent, but falls apart. Fragments of wood and string hint at former use, yet all vestiges of functionality have disappeared. Abandoned bird feeders swing precariously. Within the chaos of darting birds, falling leaves and flowers, and remnants of built space, a pattern almost emerges. These paintings emote a feeling of webbed interconnectedness that reveals the beauty of decayed things, and an allure of the poignancy of impermanence. In a series of smaller black and white drawings...
