Michael Therkildsen
Ploughmen and their Horses, oil on canvas Monogrammed M.TH and dated 1887

1887

About the Item

“The ploughed horses break” Oil on canvas signed Michael Therkildsen, dated 1887. Monogrammed bottom right M TH and dated 1887. Danish school Exhibited at the universal exhibition in Paris on 1889, under number 158 (see photo) Won silver medal This great painting shows a scene of the Danish peasant life in the nineteenth century. In a tree-lined meadow two men feed their horses. The overhead lighting indicates remarkable contrasts of color and light intensity. The coat of the horses is shiny and vibrant with light. The vegetation is treated with great accuracy and has many shades of color. Therkildsen is a true colorist and a sharp-minded painter focusing on rendering the details as true-like as possible. The costumes of the characters and the representation of their activities are real stories of rural activity at the time. Michael Hans Therkildsen (1850-1925). The son of a farmer, he very soon showed artistic talents which enabled him to enter the Royal academy of Copenhagen Beaux Arts. His real knowledge of the rural world helped him in his work, as his main subject remained the rural world. From 1880 onwards he travelled to France to study, then to Luxemburg where he was inspired by paintings by Constant Troyon or Charles Emile Jacque and in Italy where he discovered the luminosity of the sky and the landscapes. Some of his paintings can be found in Copenhagen (Staten Museum for Kunst, Hirschsprung Museum, Château D'Amalienborg). On 1887, he was rewarded with the medal "Thorvalsen" by the Royal academy of Copenhagen, which allowed him to exhibit at the universal exposition of Paris on 1889. Paul Durand-Ruel is known as the legendary art dealer who launched, almost single handedly, the Impressionist movement. He represented Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, Renoir in his Paris, London and New York Galleries. Like his father Jean Marie Durand, Durand Ruel had started as both a merchant of art supplies, and dealer. Often, these two activities overlapped, as he would supply cash strapped artists who left paintings as security. Paul Durand Ruel was one of the first to discover Barbizon artist...
