Henriëtte Ronner-Knip
After the Hunt

19th century

About the Item

'After the Hunt' is a 19th century painting by Henriette Ronner-Knip (1821-1909) Dutch/Belgian artist known for fine paintings of cats and dogs. This larger than usual scene expands her genre with landscape, red satchel and a figure with dogs in the background. The center of attention is the white Spaniel, set against a darker background of tree trunks and a black dog. In the distance, out of the woods in brighter light, are two other dogs and a man coming from the beach and dunes. In the foreground is the woven bag with a quail. Ronner-Knip is known for her romantic realism, mostly studies of kittens and dogs in interior scenes. This one is is in light and shadows, deep woodland and lighted beach, the central dog in brighter light and fine detail, and the spoils of the day with the red satchel that stands out from the natural grasses. The canvas is 24" by 32", and 28.5" by 36.5" including the frame. Verso shows Newman Gallery of Philadelphia label. This Ronner-Knip piece is done in oil paint on canvas, and is signed on the lower right side. This painting has been cleaned and yellowing varnish has been brightened with a sheen, by Saltire Gallerie. Previous restoration has included lining, a newer frame and retouching especially on the face of the black dog, but also touches elsewhere. The painting has contrasting dark trees and light beach and sky, with the brighter white dog taking center stage, and the black dog beside it. The frame is stained wood, with a egg and dart pattern in bronzed stain closest to the canvas. The frame rather than gilt is in keeping with the more rustic hunt scene. Berg is mostly famous for his sculptures which was to become his signum works later in his life. He is known primarily for his abstract artworks. He was educated at the Technical School and Althin's painting school in Stockholm 1911–1914. In the years 1914–1917 he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and started with animal painting in the spirit of Bruno Liljefors. Our painting is from this period just after he finished his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In 1921, he studied in Berlin and Dresden which was followed by a trip to Egypt in 1925. In the same year he moved to Paris and had a studio on rue Guénégaud. He studied with André Lhote and his interest in cubism was awakened. Made sketch drawings at the free academies Colarossi and La Grande Chaumière and in 1927 he met the Swedish artist Erik Olson...
