Shao Yuan Zhang
Thunder, Oil Painting

2019

About the Item

Artist Comments
"This painting was inspired by the idea that we are shaped by outside forces, but remain unchanged, we persist in the face of adversity," says Shao. "It is what makes us human." Shao's energetic paintings of stallions explore and illustrate movement through nature. This work represents an immigrant's journey, filled with strength and perseverance. Shao incorporates both contemporary watercolor and traditional ink calligraphy styles into this series of oil paintings.

About the Artist
Art has been with Shao Yuan Zhang for the majority of his extraordinary, and at times difficult, life journey. Raised in communist China, Zhang was sent to the countryside as a teenager where he worked in the rice fields and created Cultural Revolution propaganda art for the communist party. He immigrated to the U.S. in the 1980s and settled in Utah to attend art school. His energetic paintings of racehorses juxtapose a contemporary feel with a traditional Chinese ink painting style. Through the combination of subject matter and technique, Zhang incorporates both the East and West in his work.

Artist Jeff Fleming shows a contemporary portrait of a charming dog bouncing a blue ball with its button nose. "Dalmatians have a storied history of their contributions to helping firefighters," says Jeff. He pays tribute to their bravery and adds the stars and stripes background to emphasize their important role in American history. Jeff creates details with brushes and string for decorative patterns, whisking paint in random strokes for a dynamic boost of energy.

    About the Artist

Inspired by the German Shepherd for their loyalty and dedication, artist Jeff Fleming paints a portrait of the canine. He displays the stars and stripes background to emphasize freedom — and fun. Jeff starts with a pencil sketch and applies oil paint using his fingers then adds details with brushes and string for decorative patterns. "I whisk paint in random strokes, a technique which adds a boost of energy," says Jeff.

This painting is part of a series of whimsical foxes. For these pieces, Tara has a collection of small toy foxes that she sets up like a still life for reference. I needed a dark background to offset the desert sand and warm hues of the fox, so I added in a dark sky flecked with little stars, Tara explains of this painting. I think of foxes as mystical creatures, leading the viewer to an otherworldly destination.

The two artists and industrial designers, Ampi Arozarena and Elena De La Fuente describe form and color as their core of exploration. They admire the dual identity the two elements create in their works of art. They are driven by the optical and physical sensation materials become on their unique canvasses. Projected shadows upon their work are also an important factor, this effect is generated in these two works with a 3D abstract placement of the main elements. It´s unique and neutral colors are also very easy to combine in any surrounding. This outstanding book canvass is handmade from abandoned and rescued books in an old library found in the Center of Mexico City. The two artists decided to give new life to them with this outstanding piece. It took them 5 complete months to make. It is also extremely easy to install for it comes in separate book strands...
