About the Item
The Tiger
British School, circa 1980's
after George Stubbs, c.1760
oil painting on canvas, framed
framed: 26 x 50 inches
Stunning oil painting on canvas, painted on a huge scale (the frame measures 26 x 50 inches) depicting this majestic Bengal Tiger. He calmly relaxes on the floor - the artist having depicted him against a dark background which serves to emphasise that most beautiful of coats. The work is based on the earlier masterpiece by George Stubbs, circa 1770's.
With his unsurpassed knowledge of anatomy, George Stubbs became the foremost painter of animals during the Enlightenment. Here, he shows a tiger that was presumably kept in the private zoo of one of his patrons in England. Though tigers were usually portrayed by Stubbs and others as fierce, this one is in an equally natural state of repose.
