Oil on Canvas Leaping Sailfish by Marshall Anderson

1940-1949

About the Item

Original oil on canvas depicting a deep sea fishing sailfish painting by Marshall Anderson signed (lower right) in a custom silver gilt frame. It appears to be circa 1940's. The painting measures 33.5” H x 29” wide. The frame measures 38” H x 33” wide. Provenance: We acquired the painting in Coconut Grove, FL, from an antiquarian rare book dealer. We then sent the painting to a conservator in Naples, FL, for surface cleaning and he reinforced the canvas. Then, we sent it to an expert framer in Lake Worth, FL where a lovely silver gilt frame was applied. Artist Bio: In terms of the artist, on close examination, it appears that the signature reads Marshall Anderson, as the S in Anderson matches the S in Marshall. We are not able to locate information on Marshall Anderson. We believe this artist may have been active in the 1930’s to 1940’s and this work may have been illustration art for a sporting book jacket cover as the dealer in Florida indicated that the work came out of an estate in Key West, Florida. Additional photos have been added to the listing.

In this large original painting by Robert Hagan, cowboys on horseback run through the canyon mountains kicking up dust and trying to reign in runaway mustangs and they travel through the blue water and canyons. The contemporary cowboys are in trench coats with their cowboy hats flying off into the sky while holding Mustang Australian-style bullwhips that are ready to strike. Translating scenes of everyday life into nostalgic and blissfully peaceful visions of the world, Robert Hagan has become a premier Western artist of our time.
