About the Item
Please note: This painting will ship from the artists' studio in the Netherlands.
Yvonne Melchers' "This Morning She Was Still Flying" is an original, handmade oil painting that depicts a common pigeon or dove laying face down on a concrete sidewalk.
Artist Yvonne Melchers showcases her mastery of light and form in her sumptuously detailed paintings of subjects both intimate and universal. Whether painting a scene from her beloved North Sea Shore, the portrait of a strong but vulnerable young man dressed for the historical Siena Palio round, or the rumpled sheets and textures of a Venice hotel room, Melchers infuses each with a glow that speaks of the real and the ethereal. Precise technical skills join a rich historical palette and striking compositions in paintings that leave an indelible impression. (2019, Alessandro Tomassetti, artist)
Yvonne Melchers (born in Haarlem, The Netherlands) studied at the Rietveld Art Academy in Amsterdam, but had to leave after only one year on account of too many other obligations. She always continued to draw and paint next to her work at the Academic Hospital in Amsterdam. In 2009 she could quit her job and from then on she has painted full-time. Apart from the one year at the Art Academy and some short courses she is self-taught. Her work is realistic-figurative, with a strong preference for oil paint. Generally using the paint straight from the tube and using mostly bristle brushes she has developed her own impasto technique where the brush strokes are clearly visible. For all of her work in oil she uses a very limited palette, the “colours of Monet”, which are five colours besides the whites.

- Bread and Pears super realism, colorful, object, traditional still lifeBy Douglas NewtonLocated in Brooklyn, NYDoug Newton’s hyper-real oil paintings observe reality, explore translucency, reflections and luminosity, and dazzle the viewer with all the ways light can transform our perceptions. His subject matter concentrates on still lives of food, toys, candy and household objects. In addition to many group shows across the country, Mr. Newton’s show, “HARD CANDY and other confections” represents his fifth solo exhibition. His paintings have been collected in numerous private collections. Dr. Sonia Coman writes in her essay, Doug Newton’s hard candy: the confection of painting Doug Newton’s paintings are about… painting. The hyperrealist technique of trompe l’oeil or “trick the eye” is knowingly playful. It simultaneously calls attention to the illusion of a different material—for example, translucent candy wrappers—and the reality of the layers of paint, masterfully applied to the canvas. In that, Newton’s paintings pay homage to an esteemed series of trompe l’oeil masters, from Inquisition-era Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbarán to Gilded-Age American painter William Michael Harnett...Category
