Catherine Picard-Gibbs
"The Watchmen", contemporary, trees, yellow, blue, pink, green, oil painting

2023

About the Item

“The Watchmen” by Catherine Picard-Gibbs is a highly textural oil painting, with a heightened color palette of yellow ochre, blue, pink, and green, tells a story and suggests the personification of two trees who act as witnesses and guardians of the field where they have lived for many years. Expressive brush strokes and marks made by the artist's gloved fingers and hands are used in this 40 x 30 x 2-inch piece painted on gessoed panel. The sides of the piece are painted off-white and the painting is wired and ready to hang. Catherine Picard-Gibbs paints with bold brush strokes, using vibrant colors to show emotion and movement in landscapes and urban scenes. Her inspiration comes from the nuance and drama of her everyday world. Her evocative works have been featured throughout Massachusetts, in New York, and in the Midwest. Picard-Gibbs is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.

Her work, which has been exhibited at notable institutions such as MOMA PS1 and galleries including Cheim & Read Gallery (NY) and Carl Hammer Gallery (Chicago), has evolved from over the years from pastels to large-scale oil paintings and installations of people who she describes as “having not been integrated into mainstream society.” Her more recent paintings, inspired by selfies and iPhone photographs, attempt to convey the vitality and diversity of 21st century contemporary culture while capturing the ineffable moments in our lives. “The sensuality and radiant beauty of youth and ethnic diversity are depicted in my choice of subjects, as well as the ravages of time which are imprinted on our being. All stages of life are filled with humanity that both elevates and dissipates the spirit.” Her work has been written about in The NY Times, Art News, The Village Voice, The Star-Ledger, Newsday, Flash Art...
