Édouard Leon Cortès
"Porte St. Martin in Winter" Parisian Street Scene

About the Item

An original oil painting attributed to Master Painter of the Paris Street Scene, Édouard Leon Cortés (French, 1882 - 1969, ). The painting features Cortés quintessential subject, the bustling environment of an urban Parisian block at street level, amidst the transformation of the Industrial Revolution. This painting captures a flickering moment in the life of the neighborhood of Porte St. Martin and its inhabitants. A dusting of white, winter snow cover everything in sight. Parisians, dressed in the fashions of the early 20th century, walk along a street lined with snowy trees, glowing shop windows, and antique motorcars. A carriage with three white horses approaches at the center of the composition. The sky is filled with the dramatic gold and purple clouds of a receding storm. Hints of pale blue peak through the clouds to illuminate the atmosphere. Signed, lower left, "Edouard Cortes". The 13 x 18 inch canvas is beautifully framed and ready to hang in a substantial, ornate, gold leaf picture frame measuring 26 x 30 inches.
