About the Item

Adolphe-Alexandre Lesrel French, (1839-1929) The Sportsman Oil on panel, signed & dated 1905 Image size: 10.75 inches x 7.75 inches Size including frame: 19.5 inches x 16.5 inches A beautifully detailed genre painting of a gentleman with a hunting rifle and smoking a clay pipe by Adolphe Alexandre Lesrel. The man, who is dressed in 17th century costume is seated next to a table containing game, a wine decanter and silver gilt standing cup with cover. All of the props including the 17th century wheel lock musket rifle are of the period and were carefully chosen by Lesrel to bring authenticity to his works. Adolphe-Alexandre Lesrel was born in Genêts, located in the Normandy region of France, on 19 May, 1839. He was the son of a wealthy landowner Alexandre François Lesrel and his wife Anne Jourdan and his family’s financial security undoubtedly enabled him to pursue his artistic education. In 1861 at the age of 22, he went to Paris to study under Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He was also influenced by the work of Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier and began to specialise in highly detailed historical genre paintings with meticulous attention to the details of his subject's dress and surroundings. His paintings proved popular as they coincided with a contemporary nostalgic fascination with French history. Lesrel made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1865, continuing to exhibit there regularly throughout his life. As well as exhibiting in France, he also exhibited in England particularly at the Arthur Tooth and Sons Gallery in London. Having established himself as a successful artist, he married Josephine Eulalie Létang on 4 April, 1872 who was one of his models. Together they lived at 85 rue Ampère where they had two daughters. From the 1880’s, his work was focused more on historical genre scenes of the 17th century featuring gentlemen engaged in pursuits such as art collecting, sport, playing musical instruments or wine connoisseurship. Throughout his career he won a number of accolades and awards. In 1885, he became a member of the Society of French Artists, received an honorable mention at the prestigious Paris Salon in 1889 and in 1890 he became a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts . In 1907, Lesrel left Paris and returned to his hometown of Genêts, but continued to exhibit in Paris and in England. He died at Genêts on 25 February, 1929. Examples of his work can be found in a number of museums and art galleries including the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nantes, Musée des Beaux-Arts in Rouen, Bury Art Museum and The New York Public Library. Presentation: The painting is housed in its original gilt frame which is in excellent condition. • 19th Century genre oil painting of a soldier collecting his daughter from school
    Located in Moreton-In-Marsh, Gloucestershire
Andre-Henri Dargelas French, (1828-1906) Villa du Connetable, Ecouen Oil on panel, signed Image size: 21.75 inches x 17.5 inches Size including frame: 28.5 inches x 24.25 inches Provenance: Alexander Gallery, Bristol A finely painted genre scene depicting a soldier collecting his daughter from school at the Villa Du Connétable in Ecouen. The soldier, wearing his order of the légion d'honneur, walks with his daughter past a boy with dogs as other parents and school children follow behind. The ‘Villa Du Connétable’ or The Constable’s Villa was the local name for the historic Château d'Écouen. Dargelas lived at Ecouen so would have known the building and area well. Originally a fortress inherited by Anne de Montmorency, the Grand Constable and Commander of the French Army, it was rebuilt by him as a much grander property in 1539. It remained in the Montmorency family until 1632 when it passed to the Bourbon-Conde family. Like many estates owned by the aristocracy, it was confiscated by the state during the French Revolution. In 1806, Napoleon Bonaparte gave it to the Legion d’Honneur and it became a school for the daughters of the chevaliers of the order. Although it was returned to the Conde family after the restoration of Louis XVII, it was re-established as a school for the Legion d’Honneur in 1850 by Napoleon II. In 1862, the château was declared a Monument historique. It remained as a school until 1962 and in 1969 become the home of the collection of Renaissance art of the Cluny Museum. It opened as the French National Museum of the Renaissance in 1977. Andre-Henri Dargelas was a genre painter born in Bordeaux, France on 11 October, 1828 to Jean Baptiste Dargelas and Jeanne Virginie Mimandre. In 1854, he left his home to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris where he became a pupil of François Edouard Picot (1786-1868). He lived at 49, Rue d’Hauteville, from where he made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1857. He continued to exhibit at the Salon over the years, receiving a number of medals and honourable mentions. At some point during the early 1860’s, Dargelas moved to Sarcelles, a commune in Northern Paris. By this time, he had begun specialising in paintings of children in a naturalistic style at play. Many of his paintings featured school children, with some set outside against architectural backdrops, such as this fine example. His paintings proved highly popular with collectors in Paris as well as in London and New York. On 10 February 1866, he married Catherine Etienne Gabrielle Duverger. His wife was the daughter of the artist Théophile Emmanuel Duverger...

Archer was born at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, in 1808. In 1820 he went to London, and became a pupil of John Scott, a noted engraver of animals. His apprenticeship was cut short when Scott became ill, and he returned to Newcastle. There, in collaboration with William Collard he etched a series of large plates of Fountains Abbey, after drawings by John Wilson Carmichael, and on his own produced several plates for Mackenzie's History of Durham. He then moved to Edinburgh, where he made a collection of drawings of the ancient buildings and streets of the city. In about 1830 he returned to London, and entered the studio of the engravers William and Edward Finden, who were then working on illustrations for the annuals and such publications as their Bible Illustrations, and The Ports and Harbours of Great Britain. After a few years the market for this kind of illustration declined, and Archer had to find less renumerative work engraving plates for the New Sporting Magazine. Having been elected a member of the New Society of Painters in Water Colours, he produced a series of drawings of St. Mary Overy, previous to its restoration, and of Lambeth Palace. Having accumulated more than one hundred drawings of London...
