About the Item
Albert Marquet was a French painter. He initially became one of the Fauve painters and a lifelong friend of Henri Matisse. Marquet subsequently painted in a more naturalistic style, primarily landscapes, but also several portraits and, between 1910 and 1914, several female nude paintings.
Marquet, great master of landscapes
and excellent painter of water
He met Matisse in 1890 in the Ecole des Arts Décos, then entered the Beaux-Arts in Gustave Moreau’s class. Matisse, Manguin and Camoin became faithful friends.
In 1905 Marquet exhibited at the famous Salon d’Automne with the Fauves.
That same year he began his series of the Quays of Paris, boldly brushed paintings with thick shadows using two or three violently contrasting or blurred colours and which are considered as the Fauve period of this artist.
Marquet life was punctuated by travel with a predilection for Northern Africa and in particular, Algiers, where he met his wife Marcelle Martinet in 1920.
Marquet’s art is all about exactitude and sobriety. His watercolours and canvasses are full of the strength of one who knows how to condense the essential and hide the superfluous. He had a sense of balance and the weight of things. He was an excellent painter of water in all it’s aspects – rivers or ocean – and we are seized by the authenticity of his emotions.
Marquet knew how to find effect in his studies and we can say that all of Marquet’s studies were paintings and all his paintings kept the spontaneity of studies. Whether it was Vesuvius or the Bay of Naples, he had a fresh eye full of a large and natural modernity.
Marquet’s fame has continued to grow with time. He is today an undisputed Master of French painting.
In 2019, the Musée d’art moderne André Malraux (MuMa le Havre) acquires from our gallery a major painting of Albert Marquet’s Fauve period: “Le Havre, le bassin”.

Albert Marquet
Albert Marquet was born in Bordeaux in 1875. He studied at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris from 1890-1894, where he became friends with Henri Matisse. He continued his studies at the School of Fine Arts in the studio of Gustave Moreau, from 1895-1898. Albert Marquet paints landscapes and post-impressionist nudes that become more and more colourful and simplified; he expresses himself - following the example of Matisse - in pure tones. At the beginning of the century Modern artist Marquet exhibits in the Parisian Salons (the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon d’Automne) and takes part in numerous art events organised abroad (Russia, the United States, etc.). Marquet meets Dufy and Camoin. He is present at the famous ‘Cage aux Fauves’, that makes a scandal at the Salon d’Automne in 1905; at this time he paints canvases with forms surrounded by black, representing portraits, the Normandy beaches or animated scenes. The artist represents the Seine, often views seen from above and creates variations of themes by changing the time of day and using different lighting. His first solo exhibition is organized in 1907 at the Druet Gallery in Paris. At the beginning of the 1910’s, Marquet paints a series of realistic female nudes. He is unfit for military service in 1914. From the 1920’s until the 1940’s, Albert Marquet takes numerous trips to Europe and Africa that are for him, sources of inspiration in his art, a means for the man to see and learn about other cultures. Albert Marquet’s theme of predilection is his landscapes close to the water (the sea, lake, or river), landscapes that he treats using soft tones that are dominantly grey. Albert Marquet, a sensitive man often well-liked for his modesty, died in 1947 in Paris.

Raised in an orthodox Jewish family in Russia, Mane-Katz was born in the Ukraine and became an early 20th-century artist, known especially for portraits and paintings with Jewish themes. From childhood, he had been influenced by stories of Jewish mysticism, which was reflected in his paintings. He had a peripatetic life between Russia, France, Israel, and America. He first studied art in Kiev at the Beaux Arts Academy, and in 1913, went to Paris where he associated with Chaim Soutine and Marc Chagall and continued his art studies there at the Beaux Arts Academy. During World War I, he tried to join the Foreign Legion but was rejected because he was too short. He went back in Russia again, this time joining the Soviet Revolution but rejected the cause because he was so horrified by Josef Stalin. He worked briefly for the Russian ballets, and in 1921, he returned to Paris where in 1927 he took French citizenship. For the next twelve years, he traveled widely, showing his art work and doing many paintings. In 1939, as World War II was breaking out, he was drafted by the French and then was taken prisoner by the Germans. He escaped and went to the United States and remained there until 1945, exhibiting his paintings at Katia Granoff Gallery and Wildenstein Gallery. After the war, he returned to Paris where he had exhibited in the Salons. In Paris to the end of his career, he worked happily, painting hundreds of portraits of rabbis...Category
